I posted this also in the 'C1-C2' section...and thought that this may help some people who may not know what can occur.


WELL...just in case anyone cares to see this. This is what happens when a person ( not me) used an entire tube of blue RTV.

When I dropped the oil pan on a 1966 327/300hp that was leaking and had so much blue RTV oozing out all over the place and.due to it OBVIOUSLY not looking quite RIGHT in my book. I am GLAD that I did.

This is what I saw at FIRST glance.

Closer look at the same area. This is what it looked like basically all teh way around the oil pan. The rear was actually worse...but by what I saw next..made me sick to my stomach and did not.

Well as you can see I took the oil pump screen out and cleaned it and THIS is what came out of the pick up screen. That is all BLUE RTV above the screen.

SO...when using RTV...keep in mind what can happen of you loose control and want to plaster the stuff on thick when only a thin coat is generally needed.

Thought I would pass this along....because as you can CLEARLY SEE....MORE is NOT better.

was the car losing any oil pressure on acceleration?

Perfect time to install a new pump....weld a new pickup on....get a stud to bolt it up with and a one piece Fel-Pro gasket...just as I did when my 66' 327/300 broke a valve and I removed the pan for inspection....

I've had two TD427's that sucked up chunks of silicone from the china rails. I guess the guy figured, "the bigger the gob, the better the job". Took both engines out, spun mains in both of 'em.
Good for you catching it when you did, that was a disaster waiting to happen.

I spent about 3 hours puzzling out a no heat problem in a 5.0 once. Everything seemed to be right, just had heat disappear for no reason. Turned out to be a glob of rtv in the intake. Car revving up, coolant would flow and sealer would go up and plug intake hose exit, shut car down and it would sink back down into coolant. It finally got stuck in the passage and I saw it.

When I had it running at idle...the oil pressure was fine when it was at idle and the engine still cold. I never allowed it to get too hot due to having something to check and repair on it. I just cranked it and kept it running long enough for it to get into the stall where it has been sitting. This car was stored for a long time.

BUT..I have to 'say'....that much RTV in the pick up screen is OBVIOUSLY not good. In my book..ONE piece of RTV is not good.

The oil pump is in extremely good condition. I have a brand new Melling pump here and when I took it apart and checked it. There is no difference in what I measured. SO...If I could see a problem in the oil pump I would replace it. I drained the oil and dropped the cartridge oil filter and NO RTV was in it at all. I also did the modifications ( opening up oil passages) to the oil pump like I have done with friends who run dirt track cars.
