USB stick not recognized

2015 coupe will not recognize USB stick in either center console slot or slot behind info screen. When I press the “Media” button it shows the AUX input, but there is nothing connected to the AUX jack. Pressing “Media” again produces “No other media available” message (or words to that effect). The USB stick is FAT32 with only a few MP3 files in the root directory and works fine in other 2016 Chevy vehicles. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Charles

I had the same issue with my 2015 shortly after taking delivery. It turned out that the HMI (human - machine interface) needed to be replaced.

Try a different usb stick.

cbernhardt 05-17-2016 09:09 AM

I tried two different USB sticks and two SD cards, none of which were recognized. One of the USB sticks has a power LED which lights up when plugged in. One of the devices that I tried is an SD card reader with a USB connector. This device has a POWER LED and a READ LED both of which are illuminated when plugged in.

With nothing plugged into the AUX port or any of the USB ports should the AUX port appear as the only available device when the "Media" button is pressed?

I've had the same problem with my 2015 even with the SD card. Some times it takes
five to ten minutes to recognize that something plugged into the input. Try using an SD
card and drive around for awhile. I think you'll see the aux recognize the port... but it may
take awhile the first time. After the first time you should be good. Good luck.

How did the dealer diagnose the bad HMI and how difficult is it to replace?
I am going to take my car into the dealer tomorrow and would like to prevent as much dis-assembly as possible.

I don't know how they made the diagnosis other than that they followed a step-by-step process of elimination provided by GM. The unit is behind the trim over the driver's side A-pillar. When I got my car back everything was perfect and it has stayed perfect the entire time (1 year 8 months) since the repair.

Mine won't usb sticks behind the nav screen, and originally my Sd cards wouldn't work in the pdr slot. Next trip to the dealer i have a laundry list of items I want them to check and this is one of them.

Took my car to the dealer today. An HMI software update cured the problem.

Good to know!

I'm curious - did everything work properly at first, then begin to malfunction sometime after you got the car? I ask because if so, it just seems odd that it would work and then need an update to restore it to working.

I don't really know. I have had the car for over a year and never tried the USB ports. I was at a car show and a friend who owns a C7 wanted to know if I had tried using voice commands for music selection. I told him I had tried using voice recognition for the navigation but never for music. He wanted to demonstrate on my car using his SD card and could never get it to recognize the SD card or a USB stick.

This brings up another question. How does a dealer update the software if the USB ports are not recognized? Is there another communications port that is used for updates?

I believe they used the CD card slot for that.

Is that the same as the SD card slot? My SD card slot was inoperative also.

I got my 2015 Z06 yesterday, and i have the same issue!! It dont read usb key at all! I took one from my truck 2016 Denali, which is basically the same infotainment, works great in my truck, the vette dont see it at all!!

Swt_86 09-09-2017 03:55 PM

It sure seems like they had a lot of bad hmi modules in 2015. I had issues similar to Steve Carter where it would take two to fifteen minutes to recognize the usb drive in my 2015. Drove me crazy for a long time but finally the dealer replaced the hmi module and all is well.

timmyZ06 09-09-2017 06:35 PM

Mine doesnt get recongnised after 2 hours! Nothing at all!!

Swt_86 09-10-2017 11:56 AM

If you haven't used the usb or SD card reader, I urge you to try it even if you don't plan on using it. As stated before there appear to be a batch of bad hmi modules out there - especially with 2015's. Try it while still under warranty. The module is not cheap and is apparently buried.

I have a similar problem. 2 out of 3 times it plays ok and then nothing, especially when the temperature is hot outside. If I turn the car off and restart, it works again. Have not taking it to the shop yet.
