Trim tag, VIN tag and engine stamp verification
4 Attachment(s)
Hoping (with heavy emphasis on hoping) I've found the car I've been searching for? Need your scrupulous eyes to look over the Trim and Vin Tags as well as engine stamp. All from 66 Sunfire Yellow Big Block coupe.
Thanking you all in advance! |
Looks good to me...I even see where the dealer stamped the month/day/year on the VIN up on it being delivered...although i cannot quite make out the "month?? but its 1st day of the month of 1965

The engine pad looks really nice with those broach marks. Not sure about the trim or vin as I have never seen a reproduction ones.

Born October 21, 1965 (according to C2 registry). Delivered by dealer 11/01/1965. Is it unusual that the trim tag is stamped B02 (October 2) and the engine was built October 15??

:iagree:
You need to take into consideraton that Its an AO SMITH BODY....not a ST LOUIS BODY, when considering dates... |
Trim Tag - OK, VIN tag - OK, stamp pad - not so much

Doesn't B 0 2 represent September 2, 1965 not October 2 ? Wouldn't that be much to early for a vin 3,640, considering that they built only a little over 2,300 for the month of September if memory serves me right. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I would think it should be in the area of the middle of October. Any thoughts anyone?

The car in question has an AO Smith body, not a St. Louis one. 66 AO Smith body production began in September 65, making "B" the month of October, for an AO Smith body.

I am not now, never have been, and never will be an expert on pads and matching numbers. But...the broach marks look too deep and added. I would not rule it out as original based on my opinion, but it would make me check other engine numbers a little closer.

I respectfully disagree as indicated in the Fourth Edition of the NCRS 1966 Covette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide page 9 indicates that a A O Smith body build date starts in August 1965 (A) which no cars were built but , starting in September (B) for that month started the production of 2,031 and continuing until July (L) 1966 with a total of 27,720 cars. Everything you stated was correct for a St Louis built car starting in September.(A) and ending in July (K). Thank you for your input.

not according to the NCRS pocket spec guide page 166
That's what I get for posting before I've had any coffee. |
So we got a month in between trim tag and vin tag. Was there some sort of delay or strike in the begging of the 66 production?

Pad.......:ack:
broach marks, "L" stamp, both look suspicious to me......:yesnod: Even with worn blades you wouldn't see lines not running parallel... My.02 |

I must agree. A lot of blocks that are 50 some years old have very faint broach marks some of them very hard to see. With that said a much closer look needs to be done by someone who knows what to look for. |
