Cracked windshield

Yesterday a rock either kicked up by a truck's tire or falling from it's trailer hit my windshield and now I have a 15" crack. My baby was pristine until then. I hear from other posts on the forum that the 4.8 mm Z06 windshield is no longer available from GM. Does any glass manufacturer make it, i.e. PPG. If not, is everybody using the windshield for the coupe with HUD and if so, is anybody having any type of problem, fitment or otherwise? Thank you as always in advance. Save the wave:flag:

I have a very small chip in mine so I would like to hear members opinions also.

I read the convertible windshield was the closest to the Z.

I also read that you could use a non H.U.D windshield but the pics I seen that did that didn't look right to me. I would love to see better pics showing me otherwise.

So the body shop has ordered a new windshield from GM. According to GM the VIN indicates part #10315114 is the correct windshield. There is no mention of whether or not it is 4.8 mm thick in the GM computer system. Has anybody else used this identical part # and if so, was it the 4.8mm windshield? If it wasn't, did you install it and did it fit properly? Thank you again in advance. Save the wave.:flag:

I haven't had to change mine yet but I heard the the coupe with HUD work just fine, the only difference is the thickness. Both the windshield and rear window on the Z's where just thinner to save weight, which makes them more prone to break. Good luck !!!

I also have a BIG crack in my 04Z's windshield.

I did some searches a few months back and read a few things (no links at the moment)...

1- I read that original OEM GM ZO6 windshields haven't been made in a while, like since 2004...
2 - REAL OEM windshields go for around $2000 used
3 - It might be possible to find a old NOS OEM windshield, but not likely
4 - A regular coupe HUD windshield works fine, at the expense of around 6 or 7 pounds
5 - DON'T get a non-HUD windshield if you plan to use your HUD

Check out this thread and scroll down to Bitviper's info when you see the pics.

I replaced my windshield earlier this year with the DW1430 on my '04 Z and it was 10x better than the OE sandblasted windshield and my heads up was more clear. I paid less than $400 to get the windshield replaced.

Do none of you have glass coverage?

I'm in California. It falls under my comprehensive with a deductible. I have read in other posts that in Florida there is a no charge glass coverage.

I'm under the impression every state has it. You pay an extra $3/month or something to add a zero deductible on glass on top of comp.

My policy is only $100 for windshield replacement. Thank god because my wifes car goes through one almost every year :ack:

So DQOTD...I just had mine replaced, but it has a flaw so they re replacing it again. How do you tell the difference between a HUD and non-HUD windshield?

Fl. law says insurance company's have to change a cracked windshield at no cost to the policy holder.. Over the years I have had two replaced, and ready for number three..

up here in Jan the roads are covered in rocks, and my Z06 got a big crack. Took it to Safelight and couldn't have been happier. I did go to their shop, its a big process to replace C5 windshields and felt better having it done there than in my driveway.....

radar502 08-30-2016 11:11 AM

That looks like a big job I need one now been putting in off for awhile . Hope it doesn't leek..

Supercharged111 08-30-2016 11:29 AM

I'd prefer to do it in my garage and let it sit overnight, I can't imagine them lacking tools in their van?

SSTG 09-02-2016 01:04 PM

Does anyone know what pieces should be replaced when replacing the windshield? Or a TSB for it? I searched and googled it but could not find a clear procedure for doing it. Safelite does not call for the replacement of moldings and I have seen that it is recommended but not which ones!

100% agree and if possible let it sit for 3 days

that goop they use to seal windshields takes awhile to dry and as stiff as the z06 is you can jiggle it enough to create leaks. i have actually done this on a car with similar suspension leaving the glass shop.

on ANY stiff car don't move it after install for one day minimum and 3 would be better
