Oil Pan? 383 Stroker...
 

So my 383 stroker has to be pulled, unfortunately.

We are having a bad leak from one of the rear seals around the oil pan area. In talking with my mechanic he is not super fond of the oil pan that we picked out years ago. It was this one.. (I think.)

Long story short, it has about half as many connection points as the stock pan, further it is baffled forward and aft, not side to side.

Since I plan on occasionally doing an auto-x, or maybe a road course on odd occasion I would like to get a properly baffled oil pan. Not one that is set up for drag racing. What would you all recommend? He also recommended steel just because it is a little more durable, even though it weighs a dash more.

My car is a 79 with a 383 stroker.

I also have a Milodon for my 1980 383 I drag race and drive it on the road

The problem is that stock blocks require some grinding clearancing of the forward cylinders on the pan rail if using big ARP cap nuts and bolts type HP rods. So a stock pan would have to be dented. Morroso sold pans like I have for out to 4 inch stroker small blocks. They are 8 quart fully baffled.

As to PaulDana... No road racing pan alone can supply oil in an over "1 G long turn on a road racing track. Just think about it.... 1G and the oil is sideways. My oil pressure would go away and I broke my poly dizzy cam gear. I could have had main baring seize or anything. I went to a 4 quart Accusump setup. It's not racing when you have to let off in a turn when you see the oil pressure light flicker and gauge down to ZERO!

Agreed, but this isn't my track car. I am sure I will just want to take it around a few times on an odd occasion.

If I remember vectors, 1G lateral combines with 1G vertical (as long as we're driving on the Earth's surface) so that oil sees 1.414Gs at 45 degrees off vertical. This simple evaluation does not account for body lean though.

Why would you pull the engine just to change the oil pan? It can easily be done in the car.

I see what you are saying. :iagree: It doesn't take much for the oil pickup to not be immersed in oil. Over the years at tracks I saw quite a few cars with rod knock in the pits. My Vette got a trailer ride home. All from oil loss problems

track cars have very little body lean

I have that same pan with the one piece Felpro gasket and a dipstick. $100 plus shipping and it is yours. Pm me I have pictures, the pan was used on my old 406ci and guaranteed to fit withe no leaks.:cheers:

Well... Since I put on this pan, I have not had an issue with that... Now I do only run 180 tread ware street legal tires, not slicks .... So I have not had that problem at all... Willow has that long curve and I pop out of it at around 100 I think.. Been about 10 months now... Anyway, I do stay with pressure .... And streets of willow, a smaller more turns track with a lot of quick lateral hits, it seems to do fine there as well... So.. Just saying:-)
