Black paint for engine bay
 

Hi All,

I'm starting to SLOWLY clean up my engine bay. As I pull things apart I want to paint brackets and pulleys, etc. Alan here on the Forum has been a great help with pictures and such. He recommended the Krylon 1613 semi-flat black. In doing a little searching here it seems like many of you also recommend that paint. However, I'm having a real hard time finding it? Anyone have recommendations on where to find it? Or, can you offer "the next best thing" that maybe I can find in my area?

Old formula Krylon is now classified as an industrial coating. Check for industrial coatings outlets in your area.

I use MSC Industrial Supply.
They have various warehouses around the country.
I get mine the next day after ordering.
Make sure you order the acrylic lacquer formula and not the enamel.

Thanks to Alan I found it at grainger. Ordered online and picked it up next day. If you don't have a grainger nearby I'm sure they'll deliver.

I've used this for 30 years, on almost anything that goes satin black. You can wash this with spray brake cleaner and it will be unaffected, not so with just about anything else including powdercoat. My vette has it on all the frame and suspension, engine bay, and even the steering column and some interior plastic bits. Solvents and brake fluid won't hurt it...

Fastenal can get it. I ordered two cases for a good price and if I remember correctly it was here the next day.

Whats the difference between semi flat black, and satin black?

"Blitz" black is available at any John Deere sales/supply store. It has the same color and sheen as the old Krylon stuff; but it is toughter and shoots on better.

Use that stuff (semi-flat or satin black) for engine compartment SURFACES. Use semi-gloss black for engine compartment COMPONENTS (air cleaner, A/C compressor, accessories, pulleys, brackets, etc).

I use Rustolem Satin Black #777 available everywhere. Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart.

WOW! That AG111 sounds like great stuff. You best not let the EPA know how good it is or they will either ban it or put a stiff tax on every can of it.

:iagree: "Blitz Black" is some great paint. You can buy it in spray bombs or liquid to use in spray guns. I sprayed the underside of my hood with it as well as the engine compartment.

For the right color/sheen of black, the John Deere 'Blitz' black in spray cans is about as good as it gets. The can is much larger and holds lots more paint than the Krylon cans. The spray is much more even and smoother; and the paint is much more durable and resistant.

But, neither Krylon or the JD paint (or any other spray can brand) will stand up to lacquer thinner!! JD stands up to gasoline much better than the Krylon paint, however.

I guess this Krylon is ok also for the chassis, right?

Yes.
I find the Krylon #1613 to be a good sheen for the frame and other chassis parts that were originally black.
What makes the #1613 different is that it's still acrylic lacquer. This makes it easy to apply and if you need to do touch up as time goes by you can do it without the fear of the paint already on the part 'lifting' or of the 'spot-in' leaving a ring around the repainted area.
