Changing from auto to 4 speed. Do I have everything.

I have the pedals, z bar and all associated parts. Trans and shifter. All needed interior parts. The only parts I have questions about is the crossmember, will the one from the turbo 400 work or is there some kind of "tongue" that comes off the crossmember. And the driveshaft yoke, is it the same.

Alan 71 11-04-2016 11:59 AM

Hi 540,
The 4-speed crossmember has 2 small brackets welded to it's forward side to accept the bolts from the transmission mount and it's it's drilled and threaded on the rear side to accept the shifter mounting bracket bolts.
I'm not sure if these on on the automatic crossmember or not. I'd think not.
Regards,
Alan

Alan, why is your driveshaft yoke so close to the trans yoke on one side with a big space on the other side?

Alan 71 11-04-2016 12:35 PM

Hi rv,
HMM??
It must be an 'optical illusion' because as you can imagine… it's not!

Alan

I am running a Hurst shifter. I am going to have to get the piece from the crossmember to the trans mount. I don't think the auto crossmember has that. Also the driveshaft yoke is that the same.

I just keep asking myself where does Alan keep coming up with these new old cars to photograph. Photos last night showed a car, on stands, sitting on a lovely wooden floor... Amazing. And he doesn't host them on PhotoBucket, either.

Alan 71 11-04-2016 02:42 PM

Hi Ed,
Pretty much the same car over a 20 year period.
Probably 90% my 71 and 10% other nice cars I've see.
I'm getting pretty fed-up with Photobucket so I'm trying some other possibilities!
Regards,
Alan

Hi 540,
I 'believe' the yoke is the same but someone with more technical knowledge than I should give you their answer!

Alan

If you plan on using a Hurst shifter you will not need that bracket that goes on the crossmember.

What bracket? I ordered the the transmission mounting bracket. I know I don't need a bracket for the shifter, that mounts on the trans.

Alan 71 11-05-2016 08:48 AM

Hi 540,
No, the shifter has it's own bracket.
That's what I show in the last 2 of the first 4 pictures I posted.
Regards,
Alan

2 more from above.

I just finished a th400 to Muncie swap. The output yoke is differevt and you will need a different u-joint. Drive shaft is the same.

Also, I first used an original shifter and then changed to a Hurst which I like much better. Hurst makes a mounting bracket which will position the shifter at the right place. I am using the fake T handle and it all looks stock.

Corvette central says they are the same.Corvette Central #: 533004

Before you tighten the exhaust bracket and trans mount , test fit a piece of exhaust pipe in the bracket to confirm that it is more or less centered-especially if you're using 2 1/2 inch pipes. I added shims under the bracket to raise the pipes and even more under the transmission to raise the tail-end and achieve better drive line angles.

540 vette 11-06-2016 07:16 PM

I don't understand how both driveshafts can be the same length. The turbo 400 is a longer trans than the 4 speed.

The Punisher 11-06-2016 08:18 PM

You may need one of these trans mount brackets

Thats probably what I will do. I know there are 2 L brackets, one on each side.
