Muncie M-20 Transmission

No longer available. Thanks for looking.

I purchased a rolling chassis and it came with an engine that didn't quite pass muster, and this M-20 Muncie transmission. It was absolutely caked with dirt, oil, grease and it took me two hours to get the bulk of the dirt off of it, but that is done now.

Rolling chassis was a 1969. This transmission is from a 1971 Corvette as evidenced from the VIN stamp and date code on the transmission. (See pictures below).

I opened the side case to get pictures of the interior which looks clean to me but I am not an expert, so I sent the pictures to an industry knowledgeable expert at Jody's transmissions. Jody assessed the transmission at a value of $750-$950 core value.

That's a really good deal! Looks great and if Jody likes what he saw that's as good as gold!

David,

I know that user Tim81 is looking for a transmission for a Auto to Manual swap. This is a great deal and may work for him.

Good luck,
Bryan

Thank you Bryan. I have posted now to his request and offered the Muncie if it will work for him. If not I still appreciate the referral.
Thank you.

Price dropped to $550 for the transmission alone. That is as low as I can go folks without bleeding out. Let me know if you have any interest. Thank you.

Can't believe nobody has snapped this one up.

I hear you Dennis but I don't fully agree. Someone owning a current 69-73 Corvette with an automatic, that wants to convert to a manual, cannot get near this much transmission for this money anywhere else, and remain as close to stock, especially for a 71. The wide ratio is not favored over the close ratio M-21, or Rock Crusher M-22, that I agree with, but look at what those transmissions demand in price today.

In 1971, as an example, 21,801 cars were manufactured. Of those, 10,060 had automatic transmissions. Of the 11,741 manual cars, 9,224 had the M-20; 2,387 had the M-21; and 130 had the M-22.

Odds are very good if you own a base 1971 with a manual transmission it is more likely to be an M-20 than either the M-21 or M-22.

And that is just 1971. Similar percentages can be found in 1969, 1970, 1972, and 1973. It is the 55,793 automatic cars built in 1969-1973 that might just like to convert to the M-20.

So I do understand your point from a purely racer or high performance stand point Dennis, but for a driver wanting to shift manually to the original feel of the car, the M-20 would fill that bill just fine.

And at $550 you probably cannot find an easier entry point if you want to make that conversion.

Just my thoughts.

Thank you.

David

I think the wide ratio would be a good choice if one where not altering the car with a late model 5 or 6 spd swap.

Put your 308 rear in the back along with the wide ration box and have a nice highway cruiser.

Put that same wide box with a 3:36 or 3:55 rear and have the same three gears as a close box with 4:10s.

The only place for that close ratio box is in a restoration that needs it or a race car.

I'm going to close this thread now. I'm getting low ball offers only and no need to let it go for cheap. I have room to store it so that is what I'll do.
Thanks for looking.
