Third Taillight

Was there an original option for factory ordering a Third Tailight or Optional Backup Lamp for 1967 Vettes ? I've heard about one on an earlier '63 & supposedly only if it were an Originally New "California" Ordered Unit. Trying to verify or invalidate a Sellers statement

65GGvert 04-21-2017 02:50 PM

No three tail lights from the factory. 67 B/U light was standard.

Clippinger Chevrolet in West Covina fixed up many a "California Six Tail Light" car for the new buyers to have delivered.........

That's pretty cool. Now if only they had a backup camera option!

I brought that up about the backup camera some time back about putting them on the 63 SWC Cars and there are several members that have backup cameras on there mid year cars. I think Frankie the Fink is one who has it, I think. You would have to ask him to be sure. :yesnod:

I am not one who likes the 6 tail lights but Clippinger Chevrolet took a big chance doing all the mid year Vettes like that. I am sure they did not do that to all of there incoming cars. Oh well, they must have sold them. If you look close you can see a few cars with 4 tail lights that they did not convert.

mikelj 04-21-2017 08:58 PM

I had several friends back in the day that had Clippinger do their cars at delivery. And, of course Jan and Dean immortalized it all in "Dead Man's Curve".

My 63 FI coupe had the 4 tail lites but it didn

Ironcross 04-21-2017 09:20 PM

My 63 FI coupe had only 4 tail lites, but had no split, you know, that 2 piece rear window

mikelj 04-21-2017 09:30 PM

That's an amazingly rare car if it came from the St. Louis factory that way, you should put it into judging.

ejboyd5 04-22-2017 08:08 AM

Remember all the '63 cars that had the split window removed to make them look like the new '64 model. Corvette were simply cars back then and everyone was caught up in the mania that accompanied model year changes.

Apropos of this discussion see what showed up less than two hours after my initial post:

At one point, it was a design consideration:

I like it better then up in the crease on the right side. I like the vent behind the door window.

By definition, they can only be found on a modified Vette.

As long as there ARE Corvettes, there will be those who claim that they have an "original" C2 with six taillights. It has been shown time and time again that they do not - no C2 Corvettes were built with six taillights. Many, many cars had them added later - either by the dealer or someone else. They don't look bad, if you like that sort of thing. As some of the prototype photos above show, GM did consider going with six - but decided against it.

Your car, your choice - just be honest about what you have. Many new to the Corvette hobby honestly don't know, and there's a lot of bogus information out there.
