Strange noise when clutch pushed in

My '65 4spd is just about ready for its first ice cream run. I recently installed a new Muncie shifter and had the linkage adjusted. Shifting fine, but, when I push in the clutch, I hear a whine and a slight grind. Even when standing still. As the car drives it shifts fine but a whine occurs occasionally when I push in the clutch. Doesn't happen all the time. What gives? Any ideas appreciated. Thx as always. Chuck

Throwout bearing?

Is that something I can tackle myself. Somewhat handy. My son will assist. Thx cCuck

Think you can remove and replace the transmission without getting hurt or breaking parts?

No, I can't. Approx. cost to have transmission serviced?

I am guessing but pulling and reinstalling the trans is probably $250-500...then, while you are there, id replace the whole clutch assembly to include the throwout bearing...turn or replace flywheel as required.

All said and done Id say $600-$800...and thats if you stay with stock replacement parts...(i.e., a Luk Clutch kit from NAPA is about $130...turn flywheel, about $35 bucks...)

Hi, sorry about the issue . The problem is not in transmission, it is a $30 part that can only be replaced by removing the transmission. Lots of other parts have to be removed to do that. A good shop can do it in 3-6 hours.

I just had the tranny in my 59 pulled twice in the last 6 weeks. The first guy in TX replaced the throw out bearing for $691. The second guy back in Indiana says the first guy knocked the retainer ring that holds the balance weights on the clutch off. He charged $300 to pull tranny and fix the problem. So as you see you can get a wide range of fees and quality of work.

My car had the same symptoms. Turned out to be a bent bellhousing cover rubbing on the flywheel.

Rare occurrence, Remove the starter and the cover and try it.
I am thinking the thrust surfaces on the rear main would have to have a lot of wear and clearance to do that. Also, had excessive clearance on the trust on a 302 and it would knock like a main bearing when the idling but go away when you disengaged the clutch.

Hope it works.

Check your shifter and clutch adjustment first before pulling the trans

DansYellow66 05-05-2017 06:40 AM

Did this noise exists before you installed the shifter? It would seem very coincidental to have started immediately after replacing the shifter - but I don't see how a shifter would contribute to the noise you describe.

make sure the flywheel cover is not hitting the crankshaft.

I had what felt like a grind on the pedal after installing the spark plug shields once. Clutch shaft was rubbing against the shield when being used. I adjusted the shield some and all was well. I didn't have the whine you describe though. :thumbs:Dave

To differentiate a possible bad throwout bearing from an possible bad pilot bearing or bushing, with the clutch pushed down and engine in gear, shift into neutral. If the noise persists, it's not the pilot bearing/bushing. I'd check the sheet metal deal first, though!
