Eaton truetrac question

Anyone installed an Eaton truetrac in a Dana 44? I recently tried to put one in my 86 Dana 44 HD but can't get the snap rings on the axles. The back of the snap ring hits the housing inside and there isn't enough room to slide it in between the housing and the axle to get it to go into the groove of the axle. Anyone else ever have this problem? thinking maybe I got a bum unit that wasn't machined properly.

..... You have to put the snap ring in and expand it before you slide the axle in ..... in other words , you slip the axle onto the snap ring .....

What he ^ said, I remember those snap rings are a big pain in the rear. You going to love the true Trac

thanks. I tried that. I even ground the snap ring down some and still wouldn't go on. Going to send it back and try with another one.

Do you have a selection of snap-rings? I'd think that since the short-axles and the differential have never been used together you'd trial fit the short-axles and the differential before ever dropping the differential into the housing. you can't establish the thickness required doing this but I believe you should be able to establish a plan.

What did you attempt to grind?

Installed a Eaton Trutrac a couple of years back and all went smooth. Used new snaprings from Tom's.
