2008 Corvette Gas Smell
 

Hey everyone,

I am new to this forum as I just bought a 2008 Corvette 1LT MN6 about a week or two ago. I am loving it so far! It's black with black ZR1 wheels and rides really well!

However, I have stumbled across what seems to be a pretty common issue with the 2008 Corvette, which is the gas smell after filling up the tank. I've been noticing it more prominently after my last fill up. I have read multiple threads about this but I wasn't finding my answer that I was wanting.

Is it best to take it to a Chevy dealer directly to get it looked at or would I be better off going to a non-dealer shop that was recommended by a friend of mine? My understanding is that the problem is likely with a cracked plastic piece on top of the gas tank which is causing spray or gas to even pool up on top of the tank.

Is that something I could go to a normal mechanic shop with and let them know what seems to be happening or is it best to go to the dealer? I don't want to get screwed over and pay $3,000 for this fix. Honestly, I couldn't smell anything when I bought the vehicle because it was not at 1/2 tank when I looked at it.

Thoughts? I'm really hoping there is a good way to go about this.... *fingers crossed.

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the new Vette!

There is a "sticky" at the top of all of the threads on the "C6 General Discussion" page about the gas smell and the problems with it - - there is a "quasi-recall" by GM where they will pay for such a problem with the fuel system for up to 10 years or 100K miles, whichever comes first. You should be in good shape - - just be sure you have the gas smell when you go to the dealership; they will not spend time working on or analyzing things without the smell.

Just to add: My 2008 letter states 120k miles or 10yrs.

I had mine fixed by a local shop because I'm out of warranty and got a letter in the mail a few months later from GM regarding this. Sent the receipt for the work in to them and they approved the repair and reimbursed me the entire repair bill.

The dealer did think that it was the fuel pump, which would be covered under the service bulletin. However, they said that if the tank cracks or the crossover tube cracks while removing the tank, that I'd have to pay for the repairs/parts. That's complete bull. I'm working on talking to them so that way they know that if they break something... it's on them.

And I just got the kiss of death.. production date on my vehicle was July 2007. Which means, my vehicle is exactly a couple weeks past the expiration for this safety issue. It looks like I have to pay $2000ish to get the issue resolved now. How difficult is it to just buy the parts myself and either myself do it or have a friend with mechanical knowledge help with it? Is it worth the hassle?

Sorry, maybe I typed the wrong word. They said it's based on more or less when the bumper to bumper goes into effect, which it went into effect on like 7/26/2007 I think. That's why they said it's out of scope.

I just put my 08 in the shop Tuesday for a new fuel pump. It was covered under the special coverage adjustment 15682. They told me that I had until October 15 before coverage ran out. My car has a automatic trans with 34K .

This is a safety issue and should not have a time limit to repair. They should all be covered
