Can You Set the TPMS??

Can you set the amount of Low Tire Pressure that you want the DIC to alarm you?

Example: if the pressure goes below 25lbs of air pressure you get a code or check light????

Don't worry about adjusting it. It will tell you when a tire is low, which one, plus it always displays pressures so you know. Standard for any car is a warning at 25% below the pressure displayed on the door jamb. Which on a C5 would be 22.5 psi give or take a couple. TPMS is not a substitute for a good tire pressure gage, which is more accurate.

It is not adjustable and :iagree: with the above.

The unit in the wheel is simply a transmitter that sends the data (pressure amount) to the BCM, where t is interpreted.

Actually, the TPMS transmit an encoded signal with the sensors identification and pressure data to the Remote Function Adapter (RFA) which is the receiver for both the TPMS and the keyless remotes. The RFA decodes the information and sends it via the Serial Data Buss to the other sensors in the car that need the information. That includes the BCM, IPC and PCM.

do you have to "link" the TPMS to the RFA if you change the TPMS in the tire or if you change tires with other TPMS in them?

At Carlisle in the Corvette Mechanic Tent there was a discussion about tires & braking systems, and the TPMS system was discussed as to how it works, one thing mentioned was that they only read when moving & are more accurate the faster you go, & when you park your car overnight & start it the next day, the reading on your DIC is from the previous day not current, until you start driving.

Interesting.... However that does NOT match the description that is given in the 2004 shop manual!!!

Seems like the info in the DIC display would only be about an hour or so old according to the shop manual description of operation................. :toetap:

He, Paul did not say if that was specific to certain years, but the discussion was about C5,6, & 7's

bobs77vet 09-01-2017 08:38 PM

very interesting.....the C5 is making me crawl out from under my 12v simple electrics rock....

how long do the TPMS senders stay good for?

is that the big GM corvette specific shop manual?

Ahhh yes..... Typical generality of Paul, Mr Corvette expert!

Yeah I know, don't ever try to challenge his expertise, or mention products or processes that are not related to GM.

Yes, I own the GM shop manuals for an 04 Corvette. It's two VERY large books in size. Earlier year GM C5 manuals were 3 volumes. Same basic format but split into 3 books each a little smaller.

That might have been me, I replaced them when I got new tires. I got the sensors and tires from tirerack, had them shipped to the Chevy dealer. Sensors were about $70, GM wanted over $200 (each!). They couldn't figure out how to train them though. Had to go to Discount Tire for that.

My 98 only had between 19 - 20 k miles. All 4 OEM sensors still work but though it prudent to replace them. I saved them in case I want to try replacing the batteries.

Confusing low tire pressure warning message.

Lots of good info here. I have an 04 C5 and while we were out of town for a week, the car sat still in the garage. When we got home and started the car, the DIC displayed a low tire pressure warning for the FL tire.

These are aftermarket tires that recommend 33lbs of pressure. I checked the pressure with my gauge and each tire was reading about 22 lbs. So I added air to bring each up to the recommended 33 lbs and I still get the message but now I get it for all of the tires.

When I cycle thru the DIC warnings, each tire reads 24lbs of pressure. So I got two other tire pressure gauges including a digital gauge and rechecked each tire. Each read 33lbs of pressure. That's a 9 lbs difference from what the DIC says. (about 33% difference).

I again started the engine and pushed the "Gauges" button on the DIC and it read low pressure at the rear tires so I pushed the "Reset" button on the DIC and progressed to the next readings. These showed low pressure at the front tires. I again pushed the reset button and cleared the display. I had the door open so it still displayed Door Ajar, so I know that the display was working..

So, if the TPMS is designed to transmit a low tire pressure at pressures between 5 and 25lbs and I know that I have 33 lbs, I'm at a loss. This is not just a defective TPMS in a single tire because it reads the same for all of the tires now.

Do I add 1 more lb of air to push the pressure to 34 so the TPMS picks up the additional pressure and reads them at 25lbs now?

I'm open to any and all suggestions to correct this situation.

I really do not want to replace the TPMS in each tire if I can help it. $$$ Whew!!

Thanks,
Keats

Push reset then drive the car up to 40 to be sure. then check them.

KeatsArizona 09-24-2017 07:47 PM

I'm guessing that unless the car is actually moving, the sensors will not reflect the correct tire pressure. O.K. I'll try the drive around to see if they will reset. Thank you..

dmaxx3500 09-24-2017 08:20 PM

using a gm tech2 scanner ,you can change the pressures when the tpms gives a warning on gm trucks,,i'll have to look if it can be done on cars too

KeatsArizona 09-24-2017 10:29 PM

Sunday eve.
glastec1, THANK YOU !! This worked like a charm. I got it out and got on the freeway. Ran it up to 65mph and got a msg that the front tires were low. Checked the rears via the DIC and they were reading 33lbs. Drove a bit more and when I got home, I turned the car off and then on again. the tires now read 33lbs each. So driving it gave the sensors a chance to update the drivers info center and everything is fine.
I feel much better now. Thanks again,
Keats

You should not have to drive your car around to have a changed tire pressure show in the DIC.

If you read the description of TPMS operation in post #10 above you will see that the TPMS go into sleep mode where they transmit only once an hour while the vehicle is parked to conserve battery power. Normal transmissions while the car is in motion occur about every 60 seconds. You might have to wait a while for the changed pressure to be transmitted while the car is parked and you might have to use the reset button to clear any low tire pressure message displayed in the DIC.

I know the 2000 & down are different than the 2001+ years, but
my 2000 generally needs to be moving for bit to show anything
but -- on my DIC.. My newer gm's will show tire pressures
as soon as key is on/engine running. But my 2000 C5 needs to
be moving about 15 mph or so before any readings come up

KeatsArizona 09-25-2017 12:17 PM

Just wanted to say Thank You to everyone that replied. This is a great forum. Lots of participation.
So from what I gather, if I simply waited for an hour or so, the TPS would communicate to the DIC that the pressures were now O.K. I thought it would happen when the pressure was adjusted (up) but by driving, it caused the TPS to send the signal for the correct reading.
Thanks again.

It is possible, but you would spend a lot of time working with the BCM ifrmware/software to do it. Not something the faint of heart or the busy should attempt.

Route99 09-25-2017 02:11 PM

For the OP, were you trying to set the tire pressure warning at a higher level to get an earlier warning of the tire pressure? (Example: TPMS advising low air pressure at 25# instead of 22# or something like that?).
