Bad news on the tranny

Couple weeks ago got stranded 80 miles from home cuzz all of a sudden the 4L60E tranny started to slip and would not go into 3rd or OD. Just got it back from a tranny shop that claims 3rd gear is gone which it truly is so now the fun begins:ack:

The 95 auto uses a 4L60E and am wondering if thiers anything special to look for when buying one or will they all fit in a 95? any info "from those who know" would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just have yours rebuilt?

Pwnage1337 09-12-2017 08:35 PM

Agreed, just rebuild the one you have. Probably cheaper than finding a used one, putting it in without knowing the condition and having to have it rebuilt anyways.

At least if you rebuild yours you know what you have

where the C-beam bolts on is different.

you know you can have a a 4L60E upgraded to 65/70 specs ? the parts retrofit and make a stronger trans

read this, it will give you some ideas

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/ccrp-...on-conversion/

then if you spend some more time with Mr. Google, you can get up to speed on what is all involved.

The 4L60E was used in a large number of different vehicles. Learned that when the one in my son's '01 Z28 failed after 200k miles.

The main body of the trans is pretty much the same. The bell housing and tail shafts change depending on the application.

We picked up one from an Astro van, swapped the bell housing/tail shaft from the failed transmission and we were good to go.

:iagree:
If you can get a GM one even a redo youre better off unless you know a good trans guy you trust. Many rebuilds are nothing more than resuing all your good parts and replacing the one bad...youll never know. thats why most shops have boxes and boxes of labeled trans parts for that next "rebuild". man I wish I knew how...could clean up.

Had a crate GM 4l60e in my 02 truck its been great for over 100k now overall. Once in awhile get a sticky solenoid but regular flushes take care of that most times. Best trans guy I know only offers a 30 day warranty. Have never broken one but over 2k is a lot for what ifs.

There is heavy aftermarket support for the 4l60e but the problem is finding a good tech that knows what he is doing. There are guys running these trans behind turbo ls motors and they live.Putting in a used trans is kind of a crap shoot. There is a youtube video with a pro that does the whole rebuild from start to finish.

here are 2 interesting reads, 1st how to make a 4l60E handle 500 hp, the 2nd, 1000 hp. parts from 65E/70E trans retrofit

Where are you located? I have a 60e for sale from a '95 Camaro. Has about 1000 miles on a fresh rebuild. Shifts strong. No reasonable offer refused.

The trans shop is telling you the truth.

Get it rebuilt and upgraded. There's some really cheap upgrades that do wonders for the 4L60.

If you need a list, there's several people here who have done it and our lists all seem to be about the same. Most are newer parts that retrofit and a competent transmission shop shouldn't have any problem whatsoever installing them.

Good luck!

I bought one of these a few of years ago.

http://www.performabuilt.com/level-1.html

After about 120K miles of "enthusiastic" driving it still works great. The coolest thing` is that it shifts normally when driving around town but when I put my foot in it, it shifts hard and fast. Tire chirping hard and fast.

Along with the 2400 stall converter, probably the best money I've spent on my C4.

In answer to your question there are some excellent videos on the tube that show you the differences in generations of the 4l60e and what to look for by year when buying a replacement.

The Vette uses a special tail so you will want to be sure to use the one out of your existing trans if your replacement is not coming out of a C4.

But where you live there are several reputable vette specialty shops ask them who they use to rebuild their customer's transmissions.

Or find a trans shop with a tranny dyno to have it run tested before installing.

I've never heard of a tranny Dyno, how much does it normally cost? Good info to have
