Need some Help...

Hello from Denmark

Im new in this forum. I recently bougt my dad in laws old Corvette from 1958.
Im About to order Some new parts for it. So I would love your opinion. Will it fit my car ? And Will it work together ?
I dont Know much about cars, so I only order the stuff and my mechanic will try to fit it to the car:-)

Edelbrock 600cfm 1406 electric choke
Edelbrock 2101 intake
Edelbrock 7201 gasket set

I dont know if my air cleaner fits the new carburetor from the old WCFB it has now. And I dont Know if the hood will close when were done. Maybe you can recommend an air cleaner that will fit for sure?

The plan was to order an MSD 8362 HEI distributor. But my mechanic told me it was "to good" He told me something about the speedometer cable. .. I did not really understand it... Can you recommend any HEI distributor that will work fine on this fine old lady ?

Looking forwards to your respons:-)

Why does the car need all those parts and what is your goal with the car

How original is your '58?

Frankie the Fink 09-21-2017 07:46 AM

You will have hood clearance problems with the Edelbrock setups, and, no the air cleaner will not fit...the WCFB has different throttle bore sizes...

You can make the WCFB work if you have the manifold and air cleaner for it....if it isn't totally destroyed.

Same with your original distributor.

Your mechanic prob wants to order the aftermarket parts because he knows nothing about the original carb and just wants to bolt stuff on that he knows will work, even if its not optimal.

A '58 is a rare machine, it deserves better..

It will fit. Only stating that...

Just need to get an adapter for the base to run the original air cleaner.

Then again the parts you have might just need some freshen up.

If it was me I would first figure out why you need to replace them. Easy enough to fix the carb/manifold you have.

I just want it to run as smooth and reliable as possible. I will of cause save the old parts for a potentially new owner so he can go back to original if he wants.
Now it runs bad. And 2 different vintage car specialist says the carb is worn out and the ignition isent that good either. I dont have Much faith ind rebuild parts.... fear the "new" one will be just as worn as the old one......

Ive been told that I need to replace the intake when I want HEI distributor. The original one has a "thing" that prevents the distributor to fit properly. And the 1406 carb will fit better and lower, than if we used an adapter.

You still will need to modify or use an adapter for the air cleaner if you plan on using the correct one.

What if I buy an Edelbrock 1221 air cleaner for the Edelbrock 600cfm 1406 carb ?
Wont it fit together?
And I guess the 2101 intake will keep it lower than an adaptor. So cross my fingers...to see the hood close...

Unless you have a tricked out 350 or something a HEI is overkill that really won't gain you that much seat of the pants performance gain. If you want to get rid of points there is a few products out there that will give you about the same performance of a well tuned up points. And a well tuned original carb will out perform any aftermarket on a stock engine build

Welcome to the forum.

Just a guess, but perhaps your existing distributor drives the tachometer (rev counter)??
So with a replacement distributor, the tachometer will not work.

Could you post a picture of your engine compartment, it will help to know what your working with.

I have an Edelbrock carb and intake on my '60 and I do not have any clearance issues. It is cozy, but it works.

This is what I have on my car:

Edelbrock 1801 carb
Edelbrock 9266 heat insulator gasket under carb
Edelbrock 2703 intake manifold
Edelbrock 7201 intake manifold gaskets
Mr. Gasket (no part number) drop base air cleaner

The only thing I had to do was dimple the bottom of the air cleaner base to clear the choke housing. Otherwise everything was bolt on.

I am running an original style points distributor, so I can't tell you for sure about the HEI distributor you are looking at. But I did drop an older HEI distributor (not sure of what is was from) to see if it would fit and the front plug wires were extremely close to the air cleaner (about 1/8 inch clearance).

As a side note, the 2101 intake boss for the oil fill tube is not drilled out, so be sure you have an oil fill provision if you use that intake. Also, the 2101 is more of a spread bore plenum opening and I would question whether that is the best intake for a square bore carb.

If you go with an aftermarket carb and intake, be absolutely sure that you have a good functioning positive crankcase ventilation system. You will lose that function right off the bat when you put an Edelbrock intake on, so figure out what you are going to use as part of the whole equation.

I am not going to question whether you should keep your original setup or go aftermarket. I am just trying to help answer your question of aftermarket parts fitting under the hood.

Terry

Dont know if the picture will help...

Sovsen 09-21-2017 03:12 PM

Im VERY sorry to hear that my choice of the 2101 intake might be a problem :o(

My plan was "until this" :

Edelbrock 1406 carb
Edelbrock 2101 intake
Edelbrock 7201 gasket

Edelbrock 8126 fuel line
Edelbrock 1221 air cleaner

Hoped this would be the winning "team"...

What is the problem with the 2101 ? And what is the solution ? Wont I be able to put oil in it ? And what is crankcase ventilation ? How can I see if it is okey ?

Sovsen 09-21-2017 03:15 PM

Now when I look at the picture I can se the air cleaner almost touch the ignition cover... wont the Edelbrock 1221 be even bigger ?

Nowhere Man 09-21-2017 03:17 PM

What performance gains are you looking for? If the car is running and your not looking for 10ths on the track why would you mess with it.
