Does HP after upgrades seem low??
Car is a 08 Z with 33,000 miles. Mods are:
Halltech Cold Air intake CNC Ported stock Throttle body (Vmax Motorsports) Fast 102 Intake Manifold (Ported by AHP) Stock Heads have been shaved .030 Texas Speed Stage 2.2 cam (234/246, .635"/.635", 112.5 LSA) BTR .660 springs with TI retainers LG Longtube headers with cats Professional street and dyno tuned (Mainline DynoLog 2500hp hub dyno) Numbers were 550HP and 504 TQ From seeing other numbers on here, I was expecting between 575 - 600 RWHP So what are everyone's thoughts on the numbers, low or about right? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...f6187bfadf.jpg |
No Head Porting and a baby cam thats probably about right. And who knows how mucn timing they put in it up top. most Heads/cam/Intake should be able to throw between 20-23* depending on fuel. My car made 560 on 17* then 610 on 23* timing.

That's pretty good for a relatively "small" cam with lower lift. No head porting, FAST intake, and TB are leaving a little on the table. As long as you are happy with how it drives, the numbers don't really matter. Take it to the drag strip with a good set of rear tires and see what it traps. I'd venture a guess it'll be around 128-130mph.
My experience with our local Mainline Dyno is that it tends to read a smidge high. Dyno's vary from area to area, state to state. So take that FWIW. |
First off, that cam is no baby cam. The GM LS7 cam with .591" lift from the beginning is anything but a baby cam, to begin with. With that low of an LSA and with that duration, you have 15° of overlap with that cam. Perhaps it is mild when compared to some King Kong LS7 grinds, but "baby cam" would not be an accurate way to describe that cam. Sounds nice from the exhaust.
With the way my (custom) TSP 116 cam (with those same .635"/.635" lobes) lopes at idle in the cabin (the exhaust sounds great,) I'm wondering if I could have went with a little more duration and slightly lower LSA and not otherwise have noticed a difference. Love the way my motors sounds, revs, and pulls though, so it's not like I can say I'm disappointed. Also, note that your dyno is SAE J607 (STD), which I've learned will typically read about 2.6% to 4% higher than a comparable SAE J1349 measurement. I like the way your dyno sheet displays some of the variables like octane, environment, intake, and AFR. http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/ght...el-horsepower/ But here is something that you might find interesting: TSP's engine dyno graph (no accessories) for that LS7 Stage 2 v.2 cam. They measured 642hp which if you take your 550 rwhp would give you a total drivetrain loss of about 14.3%. TSP measured torque at 570.4 and with your 504 dyno that equates to about a 11.6% total drivetrain (including accessories) loss. Now you've got headers, CAI, .030" milling (higher compression ratio,) and a ported TB and intake, so perhaps that drivetrain loss should be something different, but as long as your car is running well and the way you want it, I wouldn't get hung up with the dyno numbers. You can still always say it's got slightly more HP than a stock ZR1. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...b5d7c33229.jpg |
It's a baby cam for the LS7 heads and a 427 cube air pump. Im sure the car is a blast to drive and is very tame.

575-600? No. It's right in line with what I would expect....~100 rwhp increase over stock. I would also expect very little loss of driveability (low rpm surging, bucking at low speeds/in parking lots). Cant say that with most 600 hp builds...there's always a sacrifice of something.
Port the heads, bigger cam, swap in a ported MSD and NW 102 TB, and you'll be in that 600hp range for sure...but will you still enjoy driving the car? All depends on your use. Plenty of good driving ~550 rwhp C6Z's out there though. |
I have a similar sized cam (236/245 .648"/.650" 114lsa) along with halltech, nw102, mamo ported MSD, ported and milled .020" AHP heads, and catted ARH and only put down 540 on a dynojet SAE corrected. Car traps 133 so my numbers are accurate.
Some combos are better than others. |
Nice. I am the previous owner of the car.
It probably picked up a good bit of power under the curve than before, which is really what you feel instead of peak gains.. |
One answer which I read about last night on Engineering Explained on Youtube is, "what was the reading before and after the mods?"
That way, you just add what you know the car should have been stock, to what the process added, and you can not worry about dyno vs. dyno. Just an idea. They say all these dyno's are different. |

I recently upgraded and here is my dyno, did the same cam. i have some starting issues and it surges a little bit around 1400 rpm. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...a70492c42e.jpg I think I need to find a better tuner in So Cal? Edit, Notes, Stock exhaust manifold (no headers) Fresh crate motor from GM new springs, rockers and pushrods, (name and type coming later) CAI=yes Driveability is great, like I said, starts kinda hard, some times won't start. Two or three tries is not uncomon ( new tuner needed maybe). Takes a bit more throttle to get moving (none on stock). Power seems exceptional and idle is similar to OPs post, will upload for comparison... B&B exhaust and noticeably louder after the cam and mods. |

Who did your tune? Ryne Cunningham at CMS in Murrieta is one of the best tuners in business...I highly recommend.

Hmmmm.. stock intake ports on LS7 heads flow up till .650 lift. Exhaust porting is all that's needed in most cases with milling as much as you can get away with. That is not a small cam. Area under the curve is where you ET. You are moving from point A to point B in a shorter time. Yes I am being simplistic since this is simplicity. Still, if you are running a 91 tune, that sounds about right.

After much reading, I wouldn't touch any cam unless it's custom (Cam motion lobes) or ground by Cam motion. Extra power and times are proven. Even in generalities. They just have better cutting edge lobe designs and easy on the valve train and generally make more power over any comp lobed cam. Ask all the top builders. Have seen enough builds and slips and dynos with cam motion cam builds and guys who swapped out cam X to similar lift and duartion LSA and picked up 10-12 more hp and tq and better under the curve. This is not a fluke when you see it multiple times.

Here is a cold start vid, sorry about the dog LOL.

Your numbers are spot on. My custom 230/246 .634/.634 116LSA made 556 and 490.
