Set Sebring TT1 track record and won NASA East Coast Championships -Video inside

Had a heck of a weekend.

This weekend was the NASA East Coast National Championships at Sebring. I went down Friday morning. Had brake issues and a shudder in warm up. Changed pads and rotors Saturday, car still had a wobble, and brake pedal was soft. Only ran one warmup and one session Saturday, only pulled a 2:18.2, while last years national champ bested my record 2:15.4 from 3 weeks ago laying down a 2:15 flat. Got the car in the air, and discovered the front subframe had significantly loosened and lost one nut. Scrambling to find the nut, one racer who was wrecked out of his race, didn’t even hesitate and pulled his car out of his loaded trailer and pulled off the parts I needed (Terry Mathis, I am eternally grateful, you are a true gentleman ).

The team of Bob Brown and Ben Brown at XP Motorsports set to work getting car back together. We did a full brake bleed this morning, slapped on my A7’s and I took to grid for the first morning session at 9:20 am. I was in P2 grid position, but the TT1 leader did not run first session, so I was on pole. This was my golden opportunity to make it or break it. I decided I was “just gonna send it”. I warmed up the car hard on the outlap and I just sent it first lap. The result:
2:13.4, besting my previous best and track record of 2:15.4

This held and I am now the NASA East Coast TT1 champion.
Car was impounded, weighed and dynoed, and passed with flying colors(actually 70#’s over legal weight!)
I can not adequately express the gratitude I have for Bob and Ben at XP for all their work in keeping this car together and allowing me the privilege to showcase their work out there.

Today was a good day, and proof that it only takes one lap!

Nice work and congrats on some good driving. Kudos to your helpers in the paddock, too.

PS. I tried to watch the video, but it would not load.

As I told you in private, congrats..... really great job and you beat one of the best in our little world. I just watched the video, you and the car were really smooth and locked in. Joe

Congrats and great story. Kudos to Terry M. Too! My most fun times racing were back in the old scca T1 days when a bunch of us ran c5 corvettes and everyone worked together to make sure everyone made it to the grid.

you to Kevin. Congrats on your lap and win as well!

that first lap is always the fastest, before the car gets warm and starts pulling timing.

all my PB fastest laps are on the first hot lap after 1 warm up lap as well.

Lol. I laugh that I did that in the back stretch both laps. Guess that’s the “smoothest” part of Sebring....
