i think my car chassis is starting to rust :(

hi guys i have a 2008 base model with 53,000 miles. i dont have a car jack or anything but i lyed down from the back of and took a look under the car and it looks perfect but there is a little orange discoloration right around the middle maybe where the transmission is or the oil, but im wondering will this spread fast? i stored it last year and i am storing it soon this year, i do drive it in rain but im not sure why this happend. im just worried its going to spread while its being stored.

American auto makers have been producing cars for over 100 years with frame rot being something you may worry about after (this is a guess) your car has lived in a "rust belt" climate for maybe 50 years.

Drive your car and enjoy it. The law of averages says you'll be gone long before your Corvette's frame will be.

Well not quite. In 1990 I bought a '72 Vette with a rotted frame. And the salt solutions are much more corrosive now than they were back then. When I traded my '11 truck in last year, the undercarriage looked 50 years old.

As for the pik: The only "orange" I see is the exhaust system.

You mean on the oil pan where that squiggly line is? If so I doubt that it's rust.

Wait.....what? Isn't that an aluminum pan? When did aluminum start rusting?

I was thinking the same.

Aluminum doesn't rust. Worst case you have some oil seepage on the pan. Not a big deal and often fixed by tightening the oil pan bolts.

Highly recommend you take it somewhere. If you couldn't tell the pan was aluminum, weren't aware that aluminum doesn't rust, and can't tell rust from oil....the last thing you need is to attempt a repair :willy:

Its totaled, id turn it in under the cash for clunkers program

its like a little bit orange, maybe dried oil? also theres dried white spots on it too, i hope that doesnt rust somehow

AzMotorhead 12-05-2017 08:19 PM

Seroiusly, its probably just a bit of seep from the oil pan seal. Nothing to be overly concerned about.
Whatever you do dont just crank down on the rear most pan bolts. torque on those is only about 10inch pounds.
ive torn down a few motors where those have been snapped off.

The transmission is at the rear of the car. I'm sure you don't have any rust.

Didn't anyone besides me and Revet read the thread title?

". . . car chassis . . . "

The chassis isn't the oil pan, transmission, etc.
