Irwindale staying open

After being scheduled to close next month to be bulldozed and turned into a mall, California’s Irwindale Speedway isn’t done for after all.

...

But plans changed somewhere along the way, and while the spokesperson couldn’t give Jalopnik the details what did change, even vague news about a race track staying open is all we can really ask for. After all, who needs more shopping malls? Order it online. Save the short tracks.

It might be because Malls are starting to fall on hard times. Due to internet shopping they are losing their anchor stores and other retailers to bankruptcy so building new ones isn't a good way to invest your money. A fair number of older malls have already gone out of business and been bulldozed themselves.

Besides what Bill mentioned regarding the declining shopping mall business model, the land that Irwindale is built on and the surrounding area is absolutely an S hole. Bordered by the 605 freeway and pit mine quarries, the local demographic makes the area surrounding Auto Club Speedway (formerly Kaiser Steel) look Palatial by comparison. Just glad the developers came to that realization before the bulldozers did their dirty work.
