62 VIN plate on steering column ??
What are you folks doing about the VIN plate on the 62 when you change chassis or add Rack & Pinion steering
I assume any tampering/removing and replacing would cause suspicion with the inspectors Is anybody using the stock column and mocking up Ujoind Hybrid connection? |

I am thinking it is probably not a big issue with anyone interested in buying a car with this modification as common sense dictates it would have to removed and relocated.

When I bought my car for restomoding I was very particular about the vin plate being in the original location and untampered. To each his own but I'm going to have too much invested to find out something was amiss 15-20 years ago. When I am finished it will still be in the original position even if everything else around it has been changed. I saw them moved and pop riveted on when I was searching. There's just no way I would want it moved.

Not a problem with resale, I'm thinking about the Motor Vehicle Department and tampering with a VIN

It would be a problem with resale if you're selling to a lot of people including me.

Well, of course it should not be moved or altered IF the original column is still in place but a lot if restomods use an aftermarket tilt column in which case I stand by my original post.

Note the length of his steering column (as seen in the other thread). I forget if he could of used a longer column (which would of allowed him to put the VIN plate in the correct downward position on the new column). I think a longer column would of made the intermediate shaft (shaft between the 2 U-joints) to be at a slightly more acute angle, but how that clears everything else is not clear to me. Plasticman |

a longer column was not available (and we were neophytes when we tackled this...), but hindsight says I could have had a longer one made and we wouldn't have had to use the splice sleeve.
firewall reinforcement to support the column is HIGHLY recommended. Bill |
