As enthusiasts of the C4 ZR-1 and the LT5 motor, many of us are always looking to maintain or enhance the performance of our cars. Some start with basic mods such as exhaust and porting, lighter components etc. Some need to upgrade or replace components like injectors. My "journey" into tuning started w the C4 Crossfire and now tuning of my own ZR-1 for the last 8 years.
Tuning has always been a popular topic, but one not easily discussed in a single post or presentation. So I thought I would offer members of the Forum some of the lessons I have learned after 17 years of creating and modifying calibrations primarily for Speed Density motors like the LT5. This first article starts at the beginning of understanding datalogging tools for gathering the information necessary to modify calibrations. I hope to make this an on-going thread and welcome suggestions for tuning topics you all would like to see specific to the LT5. Look forward to hearing from you. Dominic Calibrate Tuning :cheers: |
Custom or Stock Improvement Chips
You say "tools for gathering the information necessary to modify calibrations".
I am assuming you are talking about a "Custom Chip" as in what Marc Haibeck provides as stock improvements or a Custom Chip for specific modifications? I am further assuming you can modify and or create Custom Chips for the ZR-1? Marc has established a way to attach his modifications to the stock chip (remove the blue stock chip blue cover and attach Marc's modification). Wherein the older method was to modify a stock chip (send stock chip to Marc and he sends it back modified). The only difference now is the 4 screws in the ECM Chip Cover have to be shortened to not interfere with Marc's attached modifications located under the cover. What I am discussing is custom tuning of a specific LT5 using analysis of data from real time logging.
Then modifying the calibration which can then be downloaded to a chip emulator for another logging session. This iterative process would be used to optimize the tune for that specific motor, as driven by the driver, with the state of modification the motor is currently configured in. And yes I have spent thousands of hours and dollars doing this for the LT5. My 92 runs on my calibration which has been modified as necessary for the various modifications that have been done. |

Hi Dominic,
this is awesome. I resurrected an old copy of ease. I haven't run it yet and had a few stumbling blocks with EASE tech support they sent the new adapter box that allows a usb which is cool but apparently the OS needs to be Win 95. I think I still have an old laptop. Ever try running it on more modern ms windoss?? |
I use ALDL droid for my 93 LT1, love it! Although for some reason, it never connects to my LG G5. I end up using my tablet for when I datalog the C4.

I have not run Ease in years.. I use Tunerpro and ALDLDroid (with my definition file) for both my windows machine and Tablet..
the USB interfaces now are quite cheap |

At Dom’s recommendation I’m now running ALDLdroid via Bluetooth on a tablet as well. Makes datalogging very easy. Dom is in the process of tuning my car as we speak. Also a very easy process.:thumbs:

for you Northern VA guys who would like to do some tuning and learn more about it, how about we do a hands on dyno day at Demps place.
I'm going down tomorrow for some tweaking on the LSV now that the salt has washed off the roads. We had nearly 70 today!! |
