C4 towing package

Tom400CFI 01-12-2018 10:45 AM

Heck yeah!! Git'er DUN!

I know most don't like it on here...but I'm digging it. Used to tow an 18' boat with a Trans Am, so....:thumbs:

.

It's a car, you can tow with it. I towed 2 Harleys to Daytona with a 85 Corvette back in the day.

Only problem is a vette is limited to 1000lbs I believe....way over limit there.

cdm747 01-12-2018 01:47 PM

Can it - yes obviously, should it -my 88 owners manual says no.

Tom400CFI 01-12-2018 02:03 PM

I'll just drop this little gem right here....

Generally a cool vid, but have a look here, at 4:47...

Boat is 3500 lbs...with trailer and gear, you're looking at a over 4000 lb tow.

The engine & trans (assuming its an auto) are the same proven parts in trucks, might watch the coolant temp closely.

Tom400CFI 01-12-2018 07:23 PM

:iagree:

And would add that the D44 and the brakes are better than what comes in a (1/2 ton) truck.

I guess C4's can tow everything...

In Finland C4 is limited to 198kgs, that is hmmm.. lemmesee... 436lbs. And that includes the driver, passenger and luggage. So, no chance to plug a trailer behind it - unless its made of balloons...

EDIT: it actually seems that maximum allowed trailer weight for a C4 is...tadaa... 0kgs.

Tow vehicle weight, wheelbase, brakes, gearing all limit the car to 1000lbs.

I pulled with a jeep once.. trust me, wheelbase and weight are big factors.

PatternDayTrader 01-13-2018 10:00 AM

I wonder how you could keep the car level if you pile on tongue weight.

I've towed with a Jeep (CJ5). Worked fine....even with drum brakes. Some planning required.

Tongue weight? There isn't a better vehicle than the C4! Just crank up on the rear spring bolts!

Its not the brakes, diff, tranny, or engine that would be the problem, I assume the it would be the Chassis that would be a problem. The rear portion of the chassis is Aluminum.

Tom400CFI 01-14-2018 09:49 PM

:iagree: This is by far, the biggest issue with towing with a C4. Hooking a trailer hitch to that rear frame is sketchy at best. If you can get a hitch that spreads the loads into the steel frame of the car, that would help...a lot.

JrRifleCoach 01-15-2018 01:35 AM

I towed a small trailer like that with my 65 Corvair from LA to Dallas.
Fricggen burned the powerglide and it still lasted another two years of DD service.

Raidmagic 01-16-2018 01:03 PM

I like it. Way to go.
