Aftermarket Intake for '86 C4

Any suggestions for an aftermarket intake? With cast iron heads. Thanks

what are your intention for the car. that makes a difference for your choices.

Improve performance. Mine's not a track car or daily driver. Just trying to get a little more HP and get up and go out of a low horse power Vette. I'll be changing a few thing soon including throttle body and new exhaust. Minus cats and smog pump.

are you going to keep the fuel injection or are you going to change it to a carb.

never mind I just saw that your going to change your TB so I it looks like you are keeping the fuel injection. changing your TB will not do much, aftermarket EFI intakes can be expensive.

You can buy intake that have a carb throttle mount with injector bungs and elbow for a TB or go with the TPI larger runners.

Consider asking the question "what can I do to get more out of my engine" rather than discussing specific solutions.

Combinations are everything so you need to look "in total" at a solution rather than component pieces.

Budget is important as it prioritises bang for buck.

eutu1984 01-13-2018 10:19 AM

to answer the original question there are a few intake options out there none that just bolt on. no one I now of still make aftermarket runners any more. even then you will need to change other components to make it work well.

or sum thing like this. http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/vem...flo-xt-intake/

The specific goals for the car are needed because there are different directions you can go with the intake to make it perform entirely differently.

Sounds to me like you just want to perk it up a little, and as long as you're keeping the iron '624 heads, thats about all you can do.

I would recommend you have the plenum ported out, and add a larger set of runners like AS&M, then port match those to a new base manifold like the Accel base or BigMouth base. I would not change the TB. No need and no gain with this setup from that change.

Then a set of headers is warranted.

These changes do not necessarily require a chip to be reburned for them, but if you believe you'll be done after this then that is a good idea to optimize it.

Keep the fuel injection

there is some one selling a complete flowmaster exhaust in the parts for sale section says 84 to 85 but I would think it should fit 86 as well.

Edlebrock has a new "miniram intake priced at 500 bucks for the L98 engine set up

MatthewMiller 01-26-2018 03:15 PM

Even with keeping the heads and cam stock, a miniram style intake will extend the top end range of the engine. That will make it more flexible and potentially more fun to drive. What you'll give up is the extra bump in power centered the 3500rpm area. Combine that short-runner intake with a little more cam (along the lines of a Hot Cam, maybe) and you will get a lot more useful speed range and more power.

^^^
see david fredericks converted lt1 intakes in the parts section, another option that is fairly cost effective. No super cheap way, pro flow is reas.but not cheap minirams and superrams are stupid $ same with TPI stuff.

If thats out of budget stiick a small cam, get some used headers/true duals on there and beat it til it blows/build something bigger on the side.

Its a never ending pit once you take it from stock. Misery loves company so I suggest you go for it!

Potentially is the key word. I remember at least one person converting an L98 to a miniram...then going back because of the loss of torque "feel". I can't say it's common because one/two others found the need to cam it after the conversion...to get back the torque "thrill".

If a cam is in the cards, the MR, converted LT1, Edelbrock aren't bad options. It's hard to find anything "cheap". Large tube intakes are the other option but will run you well over $500 unless you get lucky. That includes the SuperRam (mid-runner) intake.

In general, it's been few/far between to see someone swap an intake only -- in an L98 -- and have them rave over the results. If you really want a bump, you should consider a cam/headers too.

If you're RPO codes (typically under glovebox lid) don't include G92, you may want to consider a gear swap too/instead. They can be a good bang-for-the-buck conversion....In terms of "feel", probably better than an intake alone.

IMO The are far better inexpensive iron heads out there, if you can't get aluminum. I would change the heads and intake or leave it alone. A good intake on not so good heads is pointless.

Another thing to take into consideration is that is a flat tappet cam, so if you put a HOT Cam in or any type of roller cam you will need some Z bar lifters. I have an 86 also and I pulled the motor out and stuck a factory roller engine I built back in 2005 way before I went to a LS engine.
