Waze and new radio head unit
I like using the waze navigation app. On after market head units will this app be displayed on the screen when a phone is plugged in. If so can you also play music while using the Waze app. One last question, Any experience with the best head unit to see with the top down in a Vert. Thanks. Getting very bored with this nasty NE winter weather and need to start a new project. Figure a new head unit and a MGW shifter install while the console in apart should help cure the winter blues

Depends on the head unit you get and the phone you have. Waze will NOT currently work with apple carplay (iPhone.) I read recently that it will soon (or maybe now) work with android auto. You can get waze to play the audio alerts but not onscreen. It's really wonky and kinda useless but that's about the best I've seen to at least get the audio alerts from waze.
Waze is owned by google. Google hates apple. Apple hates google and thinks apple maps is great (it's medocore at best IMO.) I'm not sure we'll see waze on carplay anytime soon and that sucks... |
The new 2018 Kenwood excelon units will have full Waze support via the touchscreen. No more having to wait on Apple and their stupid CarPlay.

Crap.... I think you just made me spend more money..... and I just bought this darn 7704 last year... do they use some sort of app mode or something to bypass carplay?
EDIT: it appears to be what they call "true mirroring" http://www.radioworld.com/business-a...rroring/333101 |
My Alpine iLX-207 does wired Android Auto and Apple Carplay. On Android Auto, the Waze app works. I use it daily to commute in Florida. You can play the radio, any music on your phone, but not the USB flash drive, because that is how you connect your phone.

oops... I see the new DMX7705S coming out has weblink but my 7704 does not. Maybe my company will switch to android phones (not likely...) or apple and google will play nice (even less likely)

Honestly, when I first got Apple CarPlay I was a little disappointed that I could not use Waze, mostly because Apple maps was really bad back then. As time went on Apple maps got better and also included traffic updates. It may not be as good as Waze but it does let me know if during my trip another route is faster can gives me the option to select the new faster route. Waze is also part of Google maps now so if you have an Android phone and a radio with Android Auto, there is no need to upgrade your head unit.

From what I've read, any HU with support for Android Auto will work with Waze if the phone is connected via USB. I think you just need to set your default map app to Waze on your phone.

I did the same a few months ago. Found an open box Kenwood DNX574S on eBay and replaced the (older) Kenwood that didn't have bluetooth. Added front camera at the same time.
