Caused my 2nd HP Fuel Pump to fail at 5100 miles, First failed at 3800.

WOT, around 145mph, pop... dash board lights up, reduced engine power mode... less acceleration than a prius at that point.

If anyone knows any tricks to these HP Pumps, and seating them properly, that GM may not have done right on the first round, and then the techs at my dealer here in florida didnt do right on the second round, please let me know.

Otherwise, this car is on a sure path to being lemon law'd. I bought it in June. At this rate ill go through 3 or 4 pumps before the first year is up, let alone 2 years.

car was in full auto, and touring mode. I don't mess with paddles often.

i had the PDR video rolling, pump failed at 5600 rpm WOT

Do you have any mods?

irun4cops 01-18-2018 09:06 AM

Air filter. That’s it.

It also fluttered weird 3 days ago, around the same speed and rpm, and I let off the throttle as my instinct said it was running lean. I was WOT then as well. Car stopped accelerating at the 147 mark and went backward to 146, I let off the throttle instantly by instinct. I caught that on the pdr video also.

Just dropped it off to the dealer this morning. I shouldn’t have titled this thread the way I did... I’m not positive the hp pump is the failed component... I just know it did exactly what it did last time, and they said they were certain the hp pump had gone bad in that instance.

Who knows how certain they actually were

Did it run normal after you shut down and restarted?

I think you have a 2017. If so, have you had the TSB below performed on your car?? I believe all of the 2017 model year (and maybe some of the 2018) have this problem - they throw the P0106 code and go into the limp mode. Getting the TSB done has solved the problem.

I don't remember seeing you tell what code was thrown when your problem occurred, but if you haven't had the TSB performed I bet P0106 was probably one of the DTC's.

Hey irun4cops. You should probably go to this event...

Did the dealer find any codes after the failures occurred? They can scan the PCM history and see all the codes that occurred around the failure.

They can get a huge printout if there are multiple things going on at the time of the failure.

Yes, I should push my car to the event. Brilliance strikes twice unlike lightning.

Such a puzzle.

I might actually have a 17 instead of a 16 and not know!

New computer program. Thank god.

If the pumps are actually bad, and the pump fails again, I would suspect the cam lobe may be faulty. There isn't much to it. Cam lobe, lifer, and pump. Or the pumps have zero to do with the real yet to be diagnosed issue.

I agree. I think they should replace the lifter also, its cheap. If it fails again after that, the cam may be bad.

Probably the lifter tho

I think someone from the dealer or GM read this thread.

Just got a call from the dealer, saying they have changed their mind, and want to swap the low pressure in tank pump instead, and it's going to be a couple more days.

Either that or when I asked what was broken on the HP pump... their light bulbs started to fire.
