My first 2 runs down the 1320 in the Vette

First run is yellow slip (left lane). Did a quick burnout, stagged, slipped the clutch and spun, peddled it and it still didnt hook, stabbed clutch to go to 2nd and clutch wasnt where it should have been! Stabbed it a few more times and it came back up, put it in 3rd and finished out the run 17.72 at 107.78mph. Second and final run (right lane white slip) and I left the line like the roads were wet and I had a cop behind me and I had expired tags and illegal cotraband in my car... then squeezed pedal thru first and then did my thing for 12.91 @ 115.89mph w/ a crappy 2.4 60 ft (hankook evo2’s). Will be flushing clutch fluid tomorrow!

DA was 2189

2006 w/ vararam, hinson headers, full exhaust 390rwhp sae. Manual trans, 126k miles (original clutch), hankook ventus evo2 (stock size)

been back several times and my best is 12.42. Best 60’ has been a 2.07 on the crappy hankooks but usually cut a 2.1X. This is at test and tunes so track prep is meh. Have a set or c5z06 fronts that I plan to mount some MT ET Street R’ (275/40/17) on and shoot for 11’s

Went to track tonight and was able to lower my best 60’. Previous best was 2.08. Cut a 2.01, 2.02, and several 2.04 but my shifting game was not in point so no new pb 1/4 et. Did lower my best 1/8th from 8.21 to 8.12 while missing 3rd. Pb 1/4 is 12.42, ran a 12.43 while missing 3rd... cooler temps and more practice and I should be low 12.3 to high 12.2

DA was around 2400
still on street tires. Hope to get the DRs soon.

Car was acting wonky tonight. On hard 1-2 shifts it would bog in 2nd and not get better til I got out of it and back into it. This happened several times while shifting at redline. When I shifted a few hundred rpm sooner, it didnt happen. Sometimes it does it in 3rd or 4th too but it is only for a half second and then it fixes itself. Gonna clean the maf and tb and see if that helps.

New PB @ Houston 10/20/18

@ Cleetus and cars in Houston. First run was a pb at 12.39 then cracked this off. Still crummy street tires and stock clutch with 137,580 miles on it!

DA was +670 with a fair bit of headwind (15-20mph)

Looking good whittling it down! As you know, a set of drag radials will make all the difference and it will be like driving a new car.

Keep us posted and try mounting your phone on the window to take a video of your performance. I found it useful to watch and listen to what I do.

Thanks Joe! I am on the look out for a used set as money has been going to higher priorities lately.

Been meaning to get video too. On the 3+ hr drive home I was able to figure out my cut out problem while shifting. I am not getting off the gas quick enough or all the way so when I clutch in, I hit the limiter and then when I clutch out it has that bog/hesitation so need to fine tune my footwork (video would have helped with that as would some sort of basic data acquisition program...will be doing research on that). Also thinking about a shift light cause they are cheap and will help with consistency and maybe a 2 step cause it sounds cool as hell 👍

Be careful with used drag radials, after say 3 years they are done no matter how much they have been used or how much tread is left. Unless you can see that they are still hooking well near to the time you buy them, I would not recommend used drag radials. You need fresh rubber. There is a date code on the sidewall in an oval that tells month and year of manufacture so you can buy wisely.

If you can find a used HP Tuners cable, you can scan your car for free and if you want to start tuning it, it's $100 additional paid to HP tuners. There are other simpler programs to capture data using your phone you can research as well.

Be careful with a two step... I know two guys that blew their rears first time with them. If you get the clutch release wrong at WOT at the launch, which is what a 2 step does for you... it's not pretty! I'd suggest you learn the old fashioned way, it's easier on the parts.

Finally got mt MT ET SS 275/40/17 on c5z fronts. Went out to Alamo City Motorplex (formerly San Antonio Raceway) tonight to give em a go. Got 5 runs in. Got new best 60 and new best mph but couldnt put a run together.
Run 1 - 12.41 @ 116.91 w/ 2.06 sixty

Run 2 - 12.38 @ 118.70 w/ 2.09

Run 3 - 12.45 @ 118.73 w/ 2.09

Run 4 - 12.71 @ 112.61 w/ 1.89 hit limiter then missed 3rd

Run 5 - 12.32 @ 117.46 w/ 2.09 (spun real bad off the line)

If I could have put run 4's 60' with run 2, I would have been very close to getting my 11.

started at 20 psi and it climbed to 22 by 3rd run, dropped em to 18 and then 17.

Got video of all my runs. Was Unusually nervous measing w/ phone for video and trying to figure out the dr’s.

run 4, better launch but worse shifts. After going to 2nd there was no power so I had to pedal it quick then it starts pulling again then I missed third

Great work on the videos, very clear and helpful.

Shifting is just fine, don’t try to shift too fast, you’ll end up breaking transmissions like I did.

You need to up the launch RPM now that you have some tires...it will feel wrong at first but you’ll get the hang of it. You are letting out the clutch at a good rate it seems, just up the RPM’s. And, you’ll get your fastest times when you are accelerating into the launch rather than holding it there and then letting the clutch out. I floor it before I start launching and pretty quickly walk out the clutch. That takes some runs, I have hundreds under my belt so work your way up to it.

Thanks again Joe! I have watched that video numerous times and have several of your threads bookmarked to refer to when I want to refresh my memory. Thank you for pushing me to film my runs. I didnt realize how much they would help me analyze.

I also lifted the front back up to help with weight transfer. Front is all the way up on stock bolts and the back is all the way down on stock bolts.

Thinking next time I will start at 20 psi and stay there for until I get consistent. Car felt “wobbly” on top half the track.

Another interesting bit...stock 19” wheels with 285/35/19 hankooks ventus evo 2’s 51.3lbs (bathroom scale). C5Z fronts with mt et ss 275/40/17 on same scale = 49.9lbs I was expecting a much bigger difference.

I run 17, no wobble for me. I have my car lowered on cut rear bushings. It’s very low.

Surprised you have wobble but you want to run as much pressure as you can and still get good launch traction. If you spin let some air out. I’d stay with 20 for now if I was you.

Great start to such an addictive hobby. I am no veteran as i have only been in the 1/4mi game for 4 yrs now but I'm fast learner and have the big rings in my corner.

I would say your shifting is good, and for now, would not even worry about it as it looks like its natural for you. Joe is right about getting those revs up out the box but I understand you're not on the right tire for that. You haven't ran with those mickeys correct? Most would say 60ft'ing a manual car with good power would be the hardest part and I would agree. for whatever reason I have a knack for it and its the shifting I have to work my ass off on. Joe is totally right about staying away from the 2 step. You will likely break parts with one. Get to know the launch before you add one. I think knowing how to really get out the box hard without one, will allow you to later use one with less risk. The wobbling feeling you mentioned is likely from having a street tire with really low pressure btw. Data logging would go a long way to studying your runs. I often thought I did one thing yet log showed other wise. Also, write whatever you can on the back of your slips. DA is nice but throw on tire pressure and maybe launch rpm. it will help you dial in whats working for you. Keep that clutch fluid fresh and have fun.

I found an old video of mine from about 3yrs ago, launching with no 2 step and going wot before releasing the clutch. That's what Joe taught me. I found my own groove since but his method really worked for me.
