Bought a Nice ‘65 Coupe Today

Bought a really nice coupe today from Michael (mjmsc5) on the Forum, super nice guy, had a good visit before we loaded up and headed home. Trip was easy only about 4 hours each way.

My plans for the car are to strip it back to the bare fiberglass and repair a few minor areas and refinish in the factory color Nassau Blue, restoring the engine compartment to look more original with a single carb. Adding power brakes, new 17” American Racing wheels with redline tires, and refinishing the chrome bumpers.

The car has a phenomenal blue and white leather interior, the frame is nice and clean along with the birdcage. Front and rear suspension has been upgraded to monoleaf’s.

Here are the pics....

Congrats. I know how it feels to acquire a new old car, I can't sleep the first night.

I know, unloaded off the trailer at the shop and drove it home tonight, really tight car with a pretty healthy engine with a nice cam.

Nice '65. Repainting to the correct color will help. Present color does not go well with the interior. Dennis

I agree, if I had left the Admiral Blue, I was going to swap the light blue for dark blue, but there’s some shrinkage in a few places and a couple small stress cracks around the headlights that need addressed.

Here are the trim and VIN tags...

Haven’t decoded the trim tag yet, just looked up the color.

Looks very nice as it is, but I'm a big fan of Nassau Blue with white interior. That was my first Corvette I bought in 68. It was a 65 Coupe L79 with a/c. It was my daily driver in the Air Force. Loved it and don't have any idea why I sold it.

Yours was an AO Smith body build with blue vinyl interior, so the interior has been changed and side pipes added. Built Mar 2nd and stamped by the dealer on the tag Mar 19.
Be sure to post back pictures with any changes you make.

The tele column and teak wheel are a nice asset. I like your choice of replacement wheels too.

Those are first for me, both of my 66’s had faux wood wheels and standard columns.

I had to play with it after I got home tonight.

Very nice, have fun with it.

My '64 Jaguar E-Type OTS had both a real life wood wheel and a telescopic column. I set the column where I wanted it and never had cause to adjust it. But I still did. :D

Very nice find. You have a great starting point for your intended upgrades. Fresh Nassau Blue will look stunning with your wheel/tire choice when done. Good luck going forward.

Cool. My very first Corvette (back in WNY) was made just a few cars later, based on your VIN. It was also a blue/blue coupe with a 327 block.

My first choice would not have been a complete remake of already fully finished, good running, and good looking car. Doesn't seem to me that it could possibly be cost effective. But, maybe my thinking is the problem. If the price was on the very low side it might be a good way to go. In any case, I wish you luck turning this one into your dream mid-year.

Very nice car! Congratulations on your new acquisition! And thanks for sharing the great pix. I think it looks good right now. Based on the pix the chrome bumpers look good right now. Love those sidepipes! Redline tires will really set it off!
