clear coat plastic parts or not?

i am restoring the interior of my 1985 corvette. i am using SEM products on the plastic parts i am repainting...door sills, center console side panels, emergency brake cover and seat belt mechanism covers.

my final paint is a matte medium blue finish that duplicates the factory existing color. do i need to apply a clear coat as last paint to better protect the parts from scratching and wear or not? also i really don't want a glossy finish...is there matte clear coat?

thanks:auto:

sem makes matte and satin and gloss finish clear. i used it over my 86's medium grey interior arm pads whitch matched sem color coat titanium

satin matches oem.

thank you for your comment...does the clear coat offer protection against scratching and wear? and would you recommend using it on the listed plastic parts or not?

are your door sills oem blue? were they primered for the recoat? that matters to what id recommend

1475glenave 02-11-2018 09:57 PM

yes they are oem and they were primered as were the center console side pieces and the seatbelt trim plates

thanks again

in that case id recommend a 2k clear in satin. for the plastic door sill piece only. my experience with the door sill is that a PO painted everything black and 2k cleared over the sill plastic. dam it was har and i couldnt get it off. i painted over it after a liberal wash down with acetone and the SEM titanium held great. problem is that its a high traffic area. my shoes have begun scratching the titanium off to reveal the black with 2k clear underneath. because you primer it with a different color, I recommend you use a two-part clear coat over top of the plastic door so. That is the only place I would use it.

the vinyl arm pad on the sill, the door arm pad and the vinyl pad on the console can be sem color coat cleared or not. i did. in satin.

here is my very extensive door rebuilding thread.

and here is the larger thread showing the interior after it was completely restored. It's definitely worth it!there might be some nuggets in there for you as you carry out your interior refurb.

thanks... i am a little confused by why 2k...is it more protective than any other regular clear coat? i don't think sem makes it so i would have to use another brand.

also can i sand 2k and reapply if i make a mistake?

i will try and get u some pics but i have an old flip phone if u can believe it! i will try to borrow my neighbors smart phone and get u some pics.

Hi, a flip phone? wow! thats impressive.

2k means 2-part. in otherwords it is two part clear coat and it one of the parts is a hardner. it is available from "spray max" and it goes on beautifully and gets hhhaaarrrdddd because of the hardner. its automotive. the spray can has about a 7hr working time once you pull the tab on the bottom of the can.

you could always try without any clear to start and then pull it aprt and re-do it if required. from my personal experience the door sills take alot of abuse.

thanks for your reply

i ordered some spray max 2k clear from amazon...once i put those parts back in the car with the new carpet and seat upholstery the last thing i will want to do is remove the parts again.

i will take your advise and do it now! :)

you have me on the lookout for a two tone blue with blue interior now. :-)

cv67 02-12-2018 06:43 PM

dont think clear will be scratch resistant
Do dig blue interiors you just dont see them often. Everyones got black

VikingTrad3r 02-12-2018 06:57 PM

it has to be the two part clear. with the hardner.

I skipped using clear on the back seats. I used a semi-gloss black for plastic
