Smell from the vents?

Hey guys - disclaimer - I have NOT checked the cabin filter yet but plan to do so tonight.

However i get a weird smell from my vents and it's usually when I stop at a light or something then I start to smell it. It reminds of how an older car(especially muscle car) you'll have a little gas smell- however this isn't a gas smell it almost smells like engine or something. I'm not even sure that makes sense but wondering if anyone else has had the same issue or has any idea what it could be.

Thanks

checked the cabin filter. Clean and no smell. So I'm at a loss? It does smell like it's some exhaust possibly. Hard to tell but it's not new car smell. Lol

How many miles on the car? What color is it?

unfortunately no.... it really smells like the car is old and has some engine/light exhaust coming in.

A new car sometimes needs to burn off residual oil on the outside of the exhaust system. Unless you have oil dripping on the exhaust, drive it on the freeway for a few more hundred miles or do some performance oriented driving and hopefully the exhaust will clean up.

Try a new cabin air filter that contains activated charcoal. Who knows, $25 may make your problem go away!

Good Luck!

Ron

My car does it also, for some reason some C7’s with the dry sump will give of an oil odor after an oil change if the oil is poured in to fast. I had my dealer lower the oil level midway in the hash marks and after about 500 Miles of driving it went away. I topped off my oil above midway because I’m hitting the dragstrip and do not want to do so without full oil capacity...guess what, the odor came back. It comes in the vents when sitting at a light or stop sign.

What he said above, did you have your oil changed recently.

It is probably normal for the first 1000 miles after oil change. I noticed it my Camaro and GS, but don't recall if the current Z06 does it.

I had smell from the vents a couple of weeks ago, a musty/dusty smell especially with the heat on. Removed cabin filter and sprayed in some Lysol with fan running through all modes. Then replaced cabin filter with acdelco filter with carbon. Problem resolved which suggests it was some mould growth in the AC box and ducting. Don’t discount it and it’s a easy option to try.

great link thank you - so just keep driving? Doesn't seem like there's a true answer if you want the "fresh air" selected. Unless I missed it in the other thread.

When you have the oil changed make sure the new oil is added slowly and don’t fill to the full mark. Keep the level halfway between full and add. In this way the ‘hot oil’ smell went away in my car.
