Breather Tanks....Are they necessary??
Tried searching around on the forum, but i haven't found much info..
Now my question is, are Breather Tanks like the LMR really necassary? Seeing a lot of threads on Catch Cans..but what's the deal with a breather tank? |

I have an LMR. I feel they are necessary for boosted applications. I had a catch can previously and it used to catch a lot due to how hard I push the car. For me, the breather tank keeps my motor happy.
Ant But I was more worried about the added crank case pressure. My tuner also told me with a breather tank..will be able to smell the fumes in my cabin..is that true? Plus it's just a silly extra tank..Isn't there other options than paying 500-600 for one? And last question..does a catch can alone relieve enough crank case pressure if I chose to do that instead for $$ reasons? |
The new designed LMR tank vents outside of the engine bay. The original tank used to vent into the engine bay close to the car's air vent, and you would smell the oil fumes in the cabin. So I think that problem is solved. I recently bought a C7 Z51 that is procharged and has 625 rwhp. I too am in your position and wanting to know if this is required, if nothing else for more peace of mind.

I am making 830whp and not using a breather tank. Haven't had any issues in the last 2 years while boosted, but I'm sure most people here would probably recommend them. That LMR unit is just so expensive.

the open vented tanks usually defeat the pcv system so you lose the crankcase filtration, and have associated fumes from the full time open venting
the sealed / closed top cans catch pcv oil (do not defeat oem pcv system) but do not add airflow capability for increases in power what i do is a true hybrid between the two. keep pcv, stop pcv oil, control air like a race style tank http://gdurl.com/I4YN I move around 150 of these a month but don't take my word for it, ask an MMS customer what they think! |

^^^ I had a LMR on my car first pulled it off & went with MMS wild catch can due to the A/A TI set up on the car.:thumbs: It does work on crank case pressure & oil from the intake & T.B.
if you think you don't need it then done do nothing on the car. It is your car but to me like David has said above in his statement best of both with his set up. Plus just need the bigger line with a blower on the car. |
We created a really clean solution to adapt the OEM GM valve cover breather to -10an with our billet 90* adapters!

The reason breather tanks exist is because early on in the aftermarket boost and tuning of the LT platform there were alot of cars that pushed the front crank seal. The front seal is weaker than the LS platform and putting a breather system on the car prevents too much crank case pressure in boost and high timing applications. Is it still necessary with much better tuning capabilities.... I say probably not. However it's cheap insurance. Pushing the front crank seal isn't fun. I did it back in 2014.

I have a question about the catch can in this picture. This picture shows the setup on a NA car. Will the hoses be routed the same way to the catch can as with a Super Charger? |

I have a 2016 Stingray with Magnuson PD blower @6-7 PSI and never see any pressure in my mishimoto catch can. I rigged it with a 1-2PSI relieve valve (hidden in the breather filter) and a pressure switch calibrated for just under 1 PSI. The switch has never gone off as of yet. It is in vacuum until boost closes the PCV valve. If it pressurizes, it would set off the alarm (LED in the dash) and eventually open the relief valve. Again, never have seen it go off yet (it remained triggered until manually reset).
I'm guessing for higher boost applications or you do have some amount of blow by that is not escaped through the valve cover vents, then you may see some pressure... Pics: https://www.corvetteforum.com/g/album/9162507 |
