I reached out to Tom on here the day I found this thread, but he didn't have any lower boxes on hand. Apparently this is a pretty popular modification. No big deal, a few days later I received an email from him explaining that he was expecting some more cores to be coming in within a week, and that I could have a rebuilt Z06 box sent my way within a few days after they arrived. So I sent in the $225 to the paypal address he provided and about a week later I had the rebuilt box in my hands, with the solid Z06 mounting bushings I requested. Then my work schedule got busy and I didn't get a chance to install it until yesterday. If you've ever pulled the shifter out to install a short shifter then you can probably imagine how easy it is to install this thing. But you can't imagine how much this shifter box can improve the shifting in these cars. My car had 38k miles on it. I was starting to notice some slop in the shifter and this has solved it completely. I mean previously it wouldn't feel very solidly "in gear" when you moved the shifter into say, third. Sometimes I found myself second guessing whether or not it was actually moved forward far enough to really be in gear. That's all gone now. With this box installed, and no other modifications to the shifting mechanism whatsoever, my car feels as close as I imagine we can ever get to a shifter that's directly mounted onto a transmission in one of these cars. It's incredible. I mean that. It's night and day. and for the record, I wasn't coming from a completely trashed shifter box like he's shown examples of in this thread. Mine was still clean inside, still had some nice grease around the bushings, but one small section of the rear bushing or seal had broken away and you could see it on the shaft a little bit away from the bushing. Otherwise my shifter box looked pretty normal so I kinda figured I wouldn't notice much in the way of feel but would walk away with a part that lasted longer and just be happy with that. I couldn't have been more wrong. Even with a shifter box that wasn't a total mess, this rebuilt box changed everything about the way my car shifts. I love this thing. |
Lots of shifters going out! Here's a few pics of the process and some feedback.
While a majority of the cars running my shifter boxes are C5 and C6's, I wanted to let the C7 owners know that your car doesn't need to have a ton of miles on it to feel the benefit from this upgrade. I don't want to overpromise results but I think it's fair to say that your box begins accumulating slop from day one. The more miles you have the more slop, pretty straightforward. Here is some feedback from some very low mile, and very well maintained C6's.

My shifter box and upper shifter are stock. All I did was send the box to Tom for rebuild, left the upper shifter stock C5. Chose delrin bushings. The performance result is very much worth it. WAY more direct feeling. Vagueness or rubberyness that I experienced before is gone. Like the review above, my shifter box wasn't that bad. When I pulled it out to send it, I almost passed because it appeared to be so solid. But man, what a difference this made. For what he charges, this is a no brainer. Great work Tom! Thanks so much! |

I have been making these one at a time but it became obvious that wasn't fast enough. This is the fixture that holds eight caps at a time for the first set of operations.

What about the set pin ??? I don`t see it anymore How do you make sure that everything is lined up ???

You don't need it, the reality is the box is better off all sealed up, keeps the debris out. When you install the box you want to have the car in Neutral, with the parking brake set, and tighten it up in the middle of the slop. You'll see that there is a little bit of movement, right in the center is where you want it, just bolt it down. If you have any questions or trouble I will be available, if you want I can be available during your install to make sure everything goes well. honestly you'll probably be just fine there's nothing complicated, just goes back on the way you think it does. But in any case I'll make sure you get it done just right.

What are the instal instructions? I am not mechanical at all and would hate to snap or break something.

C5, C6 and C7's all have a two part shifter setup that consists of a top and bottom assembly. Most aftermarket shifters only include the top assembly. The only way to address a majority of the issues that translate into bad shifter feel, engagement, etc are by upgrading the lower assembly, ( the lower shifter box ) . This is only done by using the MGW shifter that includes the lower box or by using my lower box.
If you have an MGW that included the lower box than your all set, no need for my box. Between these two lower boxes there's not much difference, I would say you wouldn't notice the difference between the two, the only difference would be that with the MGW you may have to replace bushings some day, maybe not. If you do not have the lower box portion of the MGW then my box is the way to go for sure. A factory lower box what we're looking to get rid of. My lower box works with an MGW top short throw shifter, any stock factory shifter or any other short shifter or aftermarket shifter( top assembly ). Please let me know if that answered your question. In short you can have an MGW top shifter and my lower box. I would argue that is the absolute best setup for a corvette. Many of the people running my lower boxes are using the MGW top shifter on my box, they would agree.
