Disconnecting antenna on a 1992 Convertible?
 

I would like to disconnect the power antenna on our 1992 convertible. We only listen to music on our phone and CD’s, and would like to not have the antenna go up everytime we turn the radio on.

Does anyone know where the connector I need to disconnect is located on a 1992 convertible? I have read about the location on coups, but they are near the hatchback. I found a photo showing a pink/orange connector behind the passengers seat and under the storage bin, but I am not sure this is the one we need to disconnect on a 1992 convertible.

Has anyone on here done this before?

I installed a bypass switch in my '91 for all the same reasons. Check aftermarket vendors..I got mine from Mid America some years ago.

I too wanted to disconnect the power antenna on my '90 Vert. I found pulling the fuse for the interior courtesy lighting did the job. Since I seldom use my car at night it works for me.

Thanks for the suggestion - but this is really my 16 year old son’s car and he works until 10 PM at night.

I Googled up this question and came upon a lot of suggestions, some were on here - but none were actually for a 1992 convertible. I am hoping someone has disconnected the wire and knows where to do it. :thumbs:

I would think that for the antenna.....wire color and connection location would be about the same for coupe and vert. I know that different year C4's all had the small pink wire and I'm assuming they were probably a mix of coupes and verts. Mine for example I accessed by removing the passenger side kick panel. As I recall there were two or three connectors there and only one had a pink wire and that was the one.

I’ve read that on a 1992 coupe the wiring connector that needed to be disconnected was underneath the plastic trim at the rear of the hatchback, my convertible doesnt have that. I’m sure there will be an owner of a 92’ convertible that has disconnected the antenna before, just hoping they come across my thread. :yesnod:

Is the radio an original Bose, non-Bose or an after-market of some sort? That would have much to do with where you need to go for antenna control.

If after-market the brand & model could be helpful for a quality response.

You snagged an image/snapshot from somewhere that ain't correct for the car. That's generally/nearly always a poor choice.

Does your son or 'you' have the FSM (Factory Service Manual) for the '92?

It’s an aftermarket radio/CD player with bluetooth connection for his phone. The antenna goes up when the radio is turned on, and dwon when it’s truned off like a stock radio.

He has a FSM for a 1992, but he hasn’t found the connector yet.

Who installed the radio? Was it originally Bose or non-Bose? Brand/model? If Bose was the CDM bypassed or remains functional.

The original under-dash connector connector is a multi-cavity (15 I believe) connector that's easily accessed. Depending upon how the after-market was done it could be much easier maybe to do a switch there BUT the antenna command wire needs to be switched or terminated on the correct side of the connector.

The radio was installed by a local radio shop after he got the car last year - the original CD player didn’t work.

I was wondering if you could just unplug the connector to the power antenna - maybe someplace behind the seats?

Pull the carpet out in the rear, left side, you see wire with quick discounts and if you follow the wire goes into the left rear well, that's the wire for the antenna. Pull quick discount, and antenna won't work.

Or.....you you could just wait, and it will eventually break on it’s own !

Thanks, I will check into that. From what I’ve read about convertibles of different years, the connector was under the passenger storage tray. When I do find it, I will post it on here in case other 1992 covertible owners want to know the same thing.

I understand that POST #12 defeats it but I'd think it a more desirable modification to 'switch it'. It's pretty damn nice to have an antenna when you want it. I understand 'on demand' but most often not just deleting things.

If its’ just a simple disconnect, then if the antenna is ever needed again, we’ll just reconnect the harness. I don’t want to cut the wires to it, just disconnect them - but I get the “on demand” switch idea. :thumbs:

Can you see the antenna motor by looking above the LH muffler? Unplug the pink wire, or that connector. If not, unplug the pink wire that goes to the back of the radio or the amp.

My son took his car to school today because it’s raining, but I will check to see if there is a connector above the LH muffler when he gets home. I really don’t want to pull the radio out if I don’t have to, that’s why I am hoping to find the connector. :thumbs:

I highly recommend installing a bypass switch. I did it on my 1995, super easy and I'm glad I did. I used a super heavy switch that my dad gave me, surely it was up to the task. I keep the switch off (antenna down) always unless I want radio, which is rare. And once every few months I run the antenna a few times just to keep it working.

Here is one youtube video, may not apply to your year but there are lots of videos out there and you will find the information if you look for it.

Since you have an aftermarket deck, it should have control for the antenna to be up with radio and down with MP3/cd use.
