The ZR1's Track Weakness: Fuel Consumption
 

I'm sitting here reading about how the ZR1 has a $2100 GG tax and the Z06 manual has none. I know from lots of experience that the C7 Z06 goes through 11 gallons in 30 minutes on track or "you better pit before you run out of gas" in about 42 minutes. Given the expected higher fuel consumption of the LT5 it'll be interesting to see how long it'll go on a tank when you're on it at the track. I have a suspicion it won't be much more than 30 minutes.

They may spec the same. Which I really doubt it. The ZR1 has to use more fuel with 105 extra horses.

yeah, on some high speed track a full tank of gas in Z06 only lasted me 37min before the low fuel warning shows up, maybe is time to buy a big fuel can, so we don't have to get gas every session

I tow my car to the track and I carry at least 3 to 4 of these 5 gallon tanks with fuel for the Vette. I tend to dump in 5 gallons after every session to limit the giant fuel fluctuations of going from a full tank to near empty. Even though I only run 91 octane, fuel at the track pumps is bloody expensive.

These tanks are so good you can haul them full of fuel inside your Vette and you won't smell any fumes or have leakage. These cans are actually rated for carrying fuel inside airliners during military emergencies. I actually carried one of these tanks from Sacramento to Salt Lake City and back in my Viper just because I knew somebody in our caravan was going to run low and gas stations are not too prevalent out in the deserts of Nevada and Utah.

I don't think I could lift that 11 gallon fuel can without help, lol.

I went thru more than 11 gallons in 30 minutes on the road yesterday, but it fun, guess I can turn the passenger seat area into a fuel storage area on the ZR1. :eek:

No and I already put fuel in the Z06 after each session. I just hope we can go 30 minutes. Most of this is just for fun though.

Let’s see. The engine makes more power, and has bigger injectors.

I think the tires will start to go away before you run out of fuel.

You should see the fuel consumption of my 860hp, E85-powered Z06 in race conditions. I have never thought I didn't have enough fuel in that car to do the length of session I wanted.

I'm using about 1/3rd tank in a 20 minute session.

The stoich ratio of ethanol is lower so you need more fuel to reach the same lambda of gasoline. The energy content is lower but we are using more of it so it's a wash. Then you add on the additional power potential/knock mitigation of the ~105 octane E85, the intercooling effect of the alcohol and the fact that you're spraying simply more fuel volume (cooling the charge) and the benefits of E85 on a boosted car are incredible. All for $1.99/gal around here sometimes in the summer.

I'm running the Katech surge tank system to supply the low pressure fuel to the engine, then the OEM DI pump with 38% fuel lobe to boost it up to DI pressure, then Katech +30% LT4 injectors to spray into the conbustion chamber. No meth.

I burn 11 to 12 gallons in a 30 minute session in my stock C7 Z06 (I have the GM 100 octane tune and run 93 octane plus Boostane to bring it up to 100). That would be a 1/2 tank in a 20 minute session.

When I check the DIC after a 30 minute session it typically says I'm getting 3.8 to 4.0 mph.

Two tracks I run are both approximately 3.5 miles long, and I about 12 laps in a 30 minute session. The only reason I'm getting such good mileage as 3.8 to 4.0 mpg is only because some of the slightly more than 40 miles is slow driving from the paddock to staging, an out lap, a cool down lap, and driving back to the paddock.

With my C6 Z06 I could run two 30 minute sessions on one tank, but I'd be very low at the end of the second session.

With the C7 Z06 I need to put in 11 or 12 gallons after a 30 minute session to get back to a full tank for the next session.

I'm sure the C7 ZR1 will use even more gas!!!

I thought cars running E85 got worse mileage. I'm really surprised that you get such good gas mileage on your modified car using E85!!

Maybe it's a combination of things. There's usually significant warm up and some cool down in there. Also my home track is pretty tight so I'm not in full fuel consumption mode around most of the track. Only on the back straight. Or it could be that I just haven't been on the track in a long time and it's closer to a half tank and I'm not realizing.

I agree it's likely the track. What is the percentage of time at WOT?

You should bring that beast down to VIR.

Yeah. I'm about 45% full throttle at VIR.
