Light weight C5Z

We have a customer that put his C5 on a pretty intense diet. Theres still several pounds left to remove, but this is a pretty decent start. The only "light weight" part on the car is the 1 piece carbon hood and the shorai battery. Everything else has simply been removed.

The car is being set up for NASA TT3 or TT4.
  • Stock brakes
  • Stock clutch
  • Stock heater box
  • stock wheels at all 4
  • stock glass
  • no passenger seat
  • no dash
  • gutted doors
  • no head lights
  • no mufflers
  • headers
  • Bilstein coilovers
  • no ebrake

  • stock suspension, minus the coilovers
  • stock tierods

I'm looking at that list and still struggling to see how he lost nearly 500lbs. That's nuts!

No cage or fire system. Most cars stripped like that are also caged.

yep. No future plans for a cage at this point. However- a clutch, heater box removal, and some Lexan are on the list!

I'm right there with you with my c6.

David, Louis are you guys running at that weight or ballasting up for TT3/4? You would have to take a lot of power out otherwise. When you ballast up though you can put it where you want and where it will be most beneficial.

it depends on the class. This car has very little rear weight, but we only have to manage 250ish Rwhp. We plan to test both weights and power levels. We aim to be as light as possible, and then detune power to that weight.

the hard part is that to get this car on a 275 in TT4, you have to weigh 3100. The advantage is that now we can place the weight advantageously, and have a better car with a lower Center of gravity, and less pendulum.

right now, full fuel, and driver, we’re roughly 2900lbs.

What is the brown mat under the lift? Did you pour a setup plate to do alignments?

Can you go down on tire with a lower weight? Since it's no cage, I assume this is time trial, not wheel to wheel, and you don't need the tires to last that long, so you can run smaller. Bonus is that they're also lighter, the wheels are lighter, etc. etc. etc.

the tough part is NASAs new tire width rules that are really hard to test and understand. In addition The 275/35/18 is 25.5 tall, while the 245/40/17 is 24.5” tall. If we use the Hoosier, The 245 actually measures as a 275. We would need to run a 215-225, in order to meet the rules.

we have some 245 scrubs to test, but no wheels yet. Certainly a test, but something we have yet to do.

Yes, it’s a TT car.

Can we lower speccorvette to 3000lbs then:willy:

I agree with Olitho. Once this car is safe to race with a full cage etc, you will be more 2900 range without driver. Those last pounds are hard to find!

I agree! We will document it all. We have built cars as light as 2600lbs endurance ready with no driver no fuel in the past, just Depends on how much money we want to spend. Carbon bodywork is a large gain, and cost.

That's with the cage David!?

GSpeed 03-23-2018 04:40 PM

Got the car on track today for the first time after some significant mods, and its working quite well.

Splitter has .300" of rake
chassis has .500" of rake

front ride height at rest on the center of the cradle is 3.75", rear is 4.200 at the frame rail by the jack puck location.

Going to do a little more work this weekend during the Drivers Edge event to see if we cant take another 10/20lbs out:cheers:

Please can you ask the owner to share how he put that splitter together, what parts he bought and what he fabricated to go under the stock front end.

Is the setup epoxy plate something you did yourself? Can you post about how you did that and with what materials? I'm so tired of getting a flat floor with flooring tiles.

we built the splitter. Can easily build another if we have a radiator cradle. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...38e7b836d.jpeg

let me see see if I can find any info. It’s about 12 years old at this point, but has held up well. Had a C5 trans leak on the pad turning it pink, lol, and some knuckleheads welded on it melting it slightly; but not bad otherwise!

How much will a carbon body save you? Is there any keybareas to target?
