Why are dealerships not aware of 0W40 oil uses?
 

I've contacted my local dealership after reading your answer to the Mobile 1 ESP 0W40 oil question. The dealer states their last bulletin on oil use was from 2/1/18 and specifies the 0W40 is only for use in Camaros. They're refusing to change the oil in my Corvette and use the 0W40 oil. They also will not sell it to me directly. Have the dealers been notified regarding the new oil guidelines?

So far the GM dealerships in my area have been barely aware of this oil's existence and one dealer told me they have no intention of ever stocking it. Any idea when it'll be available through regular retail channels?

I just checked with our local dealer this afternoon. Pretty much clueless, but the service manager did make an effort to find some information for me. Gave me two GM documents (Doc ID 4998612 and 5021974) that applied only to 2019 Corvettes. One showed that 0W-40 with its US GM Part Number (19353135) was the correct oil for 2019 Corvettes, and the other was a Service Update #18088 describing that 284 2019 Corvettes were shipped with the Incorrect Engine Oil Fill Cap (i.e., shows SAE 5W-30 instead of SAE 0W-40) - replace it when the correct fill cap is in stock.

Sounds like GM is not adequately supporting their dealers.

Some of them are illiterate perhaps?

As of the end of last month, here is how things stand.

19353135 is a valid number, for liter bottles of the new ESP 0w40 Dexos 2. It is DEALER USE ONLY and is not to be sold over the counter. If you are in for service, then it can be used. It will be switching to a quart bottle and a new part #, but there is no release date. The 0w40 oil is Corvette (LT1, LT4, LT5), Camaro (LT1, LT4 excluding LT4 1LE), CTS-V (LT4) and CT6 (LTA) spec'd.

Local dealer to me said their GM oil distributor didn't even have availability on any of it yet.

I had my oil changed today at my local Chevrolet dealer (Cleveland Ohio Area). I requested Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP oil and got it. They were reluctant to use it but I insisted.

It only comes in 1 liter bottles for now. Part number is GM 19353135. It cost me $11.32/liter.

Have to be careful not to overfill as 1 liter equals 1.056 quarts.
A 9.8 quart oil change (Dry Sump) will result in a .77 quart overfill.

PS: The part number for Quarts when available will be GM 19370233.

Why is everyone so hung up on this stupid oil? If you're not taking your car to a road course, the old oil is just fine. :confused:

Jeff, some of us do take our Corvettes to road courses and, regardless of that fact, anyone who cares about their car, Corvette or otherwise, should be concerned about using the best oil possible for that application.

From everything I've read, this oil isn't "better". It's just a better compromise so you don't have to drain and refill before and after track days. There's nothing at all wrong with the 14-18 Mobil 1 oil.

Given the number of people I see complaining about this, I find it hard to believe they're all HPDE people.

I do intend to track my car. If my oil change comes up before the stuff is commercially available in the States, I'll order it from Europe. It's not a big deal. I do my own work specifically because I care about my car and I don't want to be at the mercy of anyone who's not as passionate about it.
