Anyone powdercoat GM OEM Chrome wheels?

Hello guys,

Anyone powdercoat their stock OEM chrome wheels? I have a set of Chrome Gumbys that I want to powdercoat. I heard that sometimes it does not come out right with chrome, but others say that with a good sandblasting, it will be fine.

Wanted to hear from someone that has actually done so, rather than heresay.

Powder coating needs to be applied to a surface that it can grip. Chrome is too smooth and slippery; powder coating won’t slip. So the first step in powder coating chrome is to strip the chrome surface.
Before you can apply the powder coating, you must sand blast the parts to make sure that any chrome surface residue has been removed. Don’t worry about losing that shiny luster; you can purchase powder coating that looks just like chrome when it is finished. This way, you have the protection of powder coating and the appearance of chrome. It’s the best of both worlds.

Like all paint as well....you can't coat or paint a slick surface.

I have a set of factory chrome spyders that I bought used. They needed to be refinished because two were curbed and because I did not want chrome. I brought them to a local powder coater who blasted them, smoothed the curbing, then powder coated them in my color. They came out great. Yes, it can be done.
