First Drag track day of the year...

First time for me in almost 2 years!
Well....it hasn't even been a week yet...only 6 days since I auto-x'ed the car with my wife, and what did I do to my Corvette Saturday? I hammered on it again! And it hammered right back! I took it to opening day at our drag track; an all day T&T. "All Day T&T"...you'd get a lot of runs, wouldn't you think? You would at most tracks but at this poorly run track, I showed up at 9:30 AM, made my first run at 12:21, got 3 runs in, and left at 4 (they closed the track at 5pm). That is a pretty terrible consumption of time, but it's what we've got to deal with here in SLC. :( On the upside, as usual, I wanted to see something with a "13" at the front of it -and that is something you do not see here in SLC from a stock or stockish LT1 car. Not only did I achieve a 13.xxx, but I also set a new personal bests at this track/elevation. Note that we're at 4500' elevation -most LT1 cars run mid 14's here. For a reference, the car I ran during my second pass was a '98-'02 Camaro SS w/a turbo. He beat me by 0.07. Today's altitude density was the best I've ever seen here, around 4800-5500, I believe. I know that there is a way to look it up....but can't find it. Previous best, on a 6000' alt density was a 13.75/101. I tech'ed emptied my car, staged and on my first pass of the year, I ran a new personal best of 13.73/102 on a pretty poor 2.11, 60' time. I had a lot of wheel spin in 1st and second, so potential for an even better ET...but hot damn...I love this car. Heck yeah. I'm 0.04 away from something with a xx.6....and I wanted that 13.6x here in UT.Went around, got in line.....and hour later, made it to the burn out box. Cleaned my tires, staged, launched better but was a tad soft on the clutch, but still did a better 2.08, 60' time, then flat foot shifted and got a lot of wheel spin, lifted to hook and got back on it, flat foot shifted 2-3 and 3-4...and eh...13.91/101. I got back in line, 2 hours later(!), I made it to the burn out box, cleaned tires and staged, slipped the clutch way too much (wasted time) and only turned a 13.86/102 on a poor2.145, 60' time. The 102 trap says the air (hp) was still there and good driving SHOULD have gotten me my 13.6x...but it was 4:00 PM and I wasn't likely going to make another pass, the way that track runs...so with two personal bests, I called it a day, loaded up and drove home. It's only getting older...but it keeps going faster. My 2.08 60' tells me that I had another .1 I could have driven out of the car, with more passes...she could have gone 13.6x in UT if I'd been on my game, better. I love this car. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...414_135244.jpg Here is the car I ran in my first pass. I think I made it to the 1000' mark before he came roaring by me! (see time slips below...) Attachment 48275122 You can barely make it out but to my left is the '98^ LS1 turbo Camaro that I ran in my second pass. Attachment 48275125 And here is the Hellcat that I ran in my last pass. Check out our ET's vs. our Traps. Yikes.... Attachment 48275123 Attachment 48275124 https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...414_164544.jpg BTW, car has 183k on it...so anyone who thinks that "cars lose power as they get older"...no. Not if they're maintained. . |
Nice hits.

Dang ... that's flying for a stock car. Must be the Napa distributor lol.
|
Those are some nice passes. I really want to take mine (when I have everythign sorted out that is) but they closed the local strip so now I actually have to drive to one...
That being said the sierra has 210k with the gas pedal being treated as an on off switch. I agree with cars not losing power as they get older. (The 3500 was the same too until it dropped a valve at 208k... But that was more than likely the fact no one changed the oil in it for 80k miles.... Just topped off when the lifters ticked... actually tried to kill that one though...) |
That car would fly at sea level. Nice passes!

Nice runs Tom. Have you met up with Jim Barth (421tpi) from SLC?
|
I have, a few times. He is "the man"...he's getting it done like I can only dream about. We have the exact same car; red/black '92 6 speeds...only diff is that he has about 700 MORE hp than I have!
He wasn't out there Saturday, but we may cross paths during a future T&T. I'd LOVE to run this car at sea level to see what it could do, but that probably won't ever happen. Still, I'm quite impressed with what it has done and I love how I can still take it out and get numbers with it, that I've never gotten before. It's such a drivable car. I love it. |
Hey Tom, congrats on the new personal best. Your car runs good. Sounds like a typical day at RMR. Nothing runs smoothly there.
I have my engine apart for a freshen up. I hope to get it back from the machine shop in the next day or two. So it will probably be a bit before I'm out there |
Congrats Tom, I'm so jealous we still have lots of snow the ground still here:ack:
I still haven't drove my car since last November. Nice looking car. |
Congratulations!

Nice! I commented on the passes in another thread....what did you do to your Vette today? Great passes! My 60 foot is like yours with 6 speed and street tires. BUT....117 mph with a 14 second pass is a first time viewing for me!!!! That should make make us feel better!! :D i take it someone took their new to them mopar to the track and found they have no clue on launch techniques....floor it and go! And get get smoked by a lesser powered car... |
Basically. But he wasn't the only one. There was a late Camaro ZL1 there too, he was running high 13's. I didn't run him, but I didn't see or hear of one pass he made, that was as quick as my passes.
Embarrassin'. |

Embarrassin'. Rookies and bad drivers are fun to watch out there. Scary Joe Six Pack can buy a car so powerful these days and not drive it well! The one thing that scares me if at the track, if the novice puts the car in your lane or into your car! Try to make a claim with the insurance company on that scenario....their insurance company won’t cover it either...by by C4! |

:D:lol: at the guy in the Dodge @ 0:30!!! HELLO....McFly...ever think about coming out of the throttle?
Those guys aren't warming their tires enough, IMO. They're going into the water....then you better get 'em warm enough to get them dry or you're going to have some problems....like those guys are having!:yesnod: |
Boy I wish I was there with my car. They were terrible, that guy in the Dodge must have been shitting his shorts.

Or sometimes we give ourselves a bad rep.....
c5 vs. c6 |
Those vids are frustrating to watch.
Just curious: Anyone notice anything weird about the Mustang's time slip from my first pass? Car number 396? |

Just curious: Anyone notice anything weird about the Mustang's time slip from my first pass? Car number 396? Interesting. He is at 97mph in the 1/8 (very strong in my estimation; I think I am at like 88mph in the 1/8 with my car; see mods below), has a 2.2 60 foot and only runs 112/113mph in the 1/4; only 15/16 mph increase from the 1/8 mile.....strange.....still gets a 12.5 ET......????? Normally with a 112 mph pass (which is about where I am at) with a 2.2 60' you are looking at a 12.9 to 13.1 sec. pass maybe even 13.2 or so........ |
