I have this code reader for obd2, can I get the obd1 adapter and use it on my 87?

Doesn't look like this unit will 'talk' the OBD1 protocol... it's more than just a connector difference.:nono:

i believe you dont even need a code reader for obd1 , just a paperclip in your diagnostic port between A and B terminals

:iagree:

But a reader is much easier and a lot faster. They can be found at most auto stores and a OBD1 reader only is not very expensive.

Innova 3123 GM OBD1 Code Reader About $20

Why? A paper clip does the same thing and is way cheaper. I'd save the money for a scanner. That is way more useful than a code reader/paperclip

I agree but a good one like I have that does all and OBD2 can run $1K.

Just trying to help as I found the paper clip way could get time consuming if you missed read the flashes. $20 is not going to kill anyone!!!

Ask someone if ALDLDriod works for you. I have no idea. I am waiting to test mine someday soon. If you want to try getting SnapOn or https://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-Tech-1-S...aHwjT#viTabs_0

I got a 3123 on amazon for 18 bucks, so waiting for that to get here, also found a kent moore j-35890 for 220 on ebay, so should be able to find anything on my car here soon.
Pretty embarrassing to go on a run and break down half way there, :ack:

Before I buy the brake tool, I'd buy a scanner first They give lots more info. You can read the data as the ECM sees it. I had an air leak No code thrown but reading data, you can see why it is doing what it does. Codes are only generated when the value is deemed implausible. If your coolant is reported to be 20 below in the middle of summer, for example it is wrong but not implausible. Code might not come on.

The reader I bought does not do ABS for my car, And I have had the ABS light for a while now. I cleaned all the wheel sensors, and I hear the relay click behind the driver seat. So the ABS scanner will hopefully tell me what is going on so I can fix it.

aklim is correct if your going to do all you own work at some point a good scanner is invaluable, just be sure to read about all the tests it does and so you get one that meets your needs as they aren't cheap .

I have and it reads all the modules plus does OBD II, I'm sure you can find one that is cheaper and does US cars only.

OK. Fair enough. Hope you find something stupid cheap that is wrong with the ABS. Sensors are long obsolete so all we get is some ratty old salvage stuff you hope works better than your original one.

Ok What next

Got the 3123 reader today, hooked it up, still no light. The light lights when I turn the key to start. Could the obd1 port be disconnected somewhere under the dash? Or is it activated by a fuse somewhere?

Cant tell if there is a connector behind it somewhere

aklim 04-20-2018 10:39 AM

I wonder if the wire to the ECM is broken somehow? I don't have a wiring diagram but someone might be able to tell you which plug on the ECM to probe?
