CAGS in C7
 

I recently saw mention of the CAGS delete mod on a C7.
I am waiting to pick up a 2019 GS vert, and need to know if this is a feature. If so, is the CAGS delete jumper the same as the C6?

Yes, you can delete CAGS with the inline wiring adapter available for $10-20 which is widely available from several sources. I don't know if it is the same as C6, but I'd guess that it is not. This was one of the first mods I made on mine M7 C7.

You can use the one from the C6, but it would be better to buy one designed for the C7. I heard a different resistor is used on for the C7.

I bought a plug from Zips Corvette for $20 it has a fake plug for the trans and a cover for the actual plug so water or whatever doesnt get into it. The message on the DIC still comes on saying to shift to 4th It works great about 5 minute install if you can get under the car :flag:

...or, you can just drive it as intended.

Not to be a smart-a** but I found one really has to loaf it around for the CAGS to manifest.

I'd suggest you drive your new car for a couple days before getting the eliminator. I put one on my C5 the day I got it and it's still on there 17 years later. So, when I bought my C7 from Kerbeck's I ordered the eliminator for it (looks just like the C5, btw). But, after picking up my '18 C7 and driving it 1600 miles home and CAGS never kicking in, even once, I simply forgot all about it. So, I've a new eliminator in the shop somewhere I'll never use. I probably wouldn't have needed one for the C5 either, had I known in advance.

Good to know. I'll drive it a while before installing one. When I bought my C6, I didn't know what CAGS was, and thought I was just mis-shifting.

Depends on how you use your car.

If you're always driving at mach 2 with your hair on fire, you'll likely never need it.

If you're like me, and DD your C7 (quiet neighborhoods, low speed streets with 4-way stops, parking lots, etc), then, like me, you'll see it activate daily and you'll agree that the cost of 4 Starbucks for the eliminator is a pittance for the freedom to drive it however you want -- racing OR loafing around.

Mine's a daily driver, too, and I almost never activate the CAGS. Total opposite to how often CAGS activated on my C5.

It just seems more natural to accelerate past CAGS given the gearing and/or programming of it.

Available for $15 to $20 would not drive an M7 without one! When I got my September 2013 built C7 had not experienced the forced shift in my C6 since I had added a CAGS eliminator. There was confusion early on about the C7 resistor value as some were getting CEL messages using the first ones out.

Don't drive so that skip shift would activate BUT got in bumper to bumper traffic and went to short shift while advancing in the line. When it would not go into 2nd looked down to see what the problem was. Had the person behind me accelerated to follow then was compelled, like many today, looked at their cell phone when it beeped to see who sent a message, they could have been in my rear because I slowed unexpectedly!

As soon as it was assured they worked for C7’s with the proper plugs and resistor value to fool the computer, bought one. Before my Grand Sport arrived purchased one and installed day one when I changed my brake pads! While the rear driver's wheel was off just jacked it up a bit more, adjusted the jack stands and went under the car from the driver's side. A 10 minute install.

Now I only have to listen to my wife tell me to shift NOT the computer! :lol:

It's normally only needed in bumper to bumper traffic, while in a mall parking lot etc. BUT for $20 why even have the computer tell you what to do!

This is true. The CAGS on the C7 is not quite as aggressive as it was on some other GM cars that I've had. In most situations, I can still put it into second without being directed into fourth, even when my dash is telling me to put it into fourth.

The engine in this car has so much torque that you can use second or third gear interchangeably even if you are going on under ten MPH. On occasion, when I see the skip shift icon light up, I just go from first to third.

I bought one fully intending to install it, but when I drove the car home 100 miles from the dealership I realized I wouldn't need it. I drive it just fine without it. I don't even realize its there anymore other than the message in the DIC.

My son installed one on his 2018 SS and likes it. Same engine and trans as our Vettes.

I have an MGW in my current C6, best mod EVER. unfortunately, the C7 is an A8

Wow, I must be losing it! I have been thinking about this for a few days and never remembered I won't have a shifter at all! :willy:

Meanwhile, for the rest of us driving with one arm, I had an eliminator on my C5, C6, and now the C7. I found the most likely spot to get messed up without it is when making a slow left turn in traffic, and wanting to shift at around 10-15 mph so have some nice acceleration at the midway point of the turn. But then, dang, have to go into 4th!! It's actually dangerous with people behind you as one post'er mentioned. Yeah, I can power through in 1st, but I just naturally want to shift. I say, get one. (Unless you're in an A8...LOL)

I think you only have to be going about 18 mph for it not to force the shift. I have seen the light flash a couple of times, but it has never stopped me from shifting.

CAGS in the C7 only works between 16-19 mph. Shift before or after, and you won't see it. I never do, but I can't imagine any situation in which I'd need to shift out of 1st before 20 mph even when the engine is cold.

If you really feel a strong desire to "granny-shift," do it at 10-15 mph, or even before, and you still won't see it. If that's too hard, just let it bump once when in the 16-19 mph CAGs zone, and pull back into 2nd without interference. Better yet, if you're the granny-shifting type, why not just let it go 1-4, and save the extra 1-2% mpg, since you're a granny-shifter anyway.:D
