Are these the only two 16" performance tires with a 27" overall diameter?

Lets say you were deranged enough to purposely install 36 year-old 16x8.5 performance wheels on your C3. Assume for the moment that whatever sickness you are afflicted with is untreatable/incurable and your only hope for happiness is to install new performance tires on these relics from the past. The tires must look as correct as possible and most importantly fill out the wheel wells just like the oem 15" rallys do with a 225/70.
Is your only choice the 235/60 16 Bridgestone RE040 or the 235/60 16 Sumitomo HTR ZII ? |
I like the looks of the sumitomo tread pattern. never heard of this brand

I've had them on a few cars. $380 smax delivered from Tire Rack for a set lol. The 'stones are $1080. This is my 987 3.4 Boxster with literally everything and I'm running the sumis. They work great. |
If you're willing to put autoX tires on your car, Toyo sells a P255/50ZR-16 TOYO PROXES RA1 tire that is DOT street legal. 26-1/4 diameter fills the wheel well nicely.

Can you post a profile picture please? The one shot you did post looks awesome. I was afraid the 26.1” diameter wouldn’t fill out the wheel wells like I want. Are you running that size front and rear ? |

If memory serves (and I bought these wheels in the 90's so that's kind of a challenge), they are 8.5" w/ 4-1/4" offset. Super light weight. I wouldn't go any wider. Maybe I have a receipt somewhere, I'll have a look.

https://tiresize.com/comparison/ FYI - on my 68 front tires I went to 235/60R15s because the 245/60r15s rubbed... just barely but annoyingly enough. I you enter those two sizes (for example) you can see the subtle differences in size, height, circumference, etc.... |

Well, when I bought mine (33+ years ago) it came with 8" rallye wheels (rims) and that is what is on there now.
And, YES, I should have mentioned that.

My understanding is that 68's had 7" rims. Is that correct? It would make a difference depending on the geometry of those wheels. I never had problems with my 69's original rims and 245's.

FYI-- '68 cars had 7" rims; later cars had 8" rims. But the wheelwell space in all early C3's (prior to '75) was the same.
