Those With MANUALS ! How To Replace Clutch Fluid

Those that are new may not have heard of the RANGER Method of keeping your clutch fluid Clean.I did not invent this method this was done from a member with the moniker of RANGER.If you don't keep your fluid CLEAN contaminants eat away at your seals and then one day BAM !! your clutch goes down and won't come back up.

First get yourself a Syringe and Prestone DOT4 Brake Fluid.I got the syringe from EBAY.

Locate fluid reservoir !! Make sure you have a towel over car this fluid destroys paint.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ea69afe49d.jpg

Remove cap!! notice the amber darkish fluid .This actually isn't too bad.

Suck fluid out with your syringe !! make sure to clean inside the bowl and the cover with a soft cloth.

Clean out Resevoir !!

Fill to appropriate level and you're done. This will provide you with many miles of driving pleasure.DO THIS METHOD EVERY OTHER TIME YOU DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL WHEN YOU OPEN THE RESEVOIR IT IS CLEAR.

Looks a lot easier than I'd always thought, reservoir somewhat small too.

Did car get upgraded MC under GM's non-recall recall?
Wondering how long fluid remains clean, if orig equipment.

Not very long !! they get dirty real fast. Most will look like a Coffee color the first time you pull off the cover.

Just what is in the bowl !! If you want to repeat the process cover it back up (make sure top is secure) and then pump the clutch about 30 or 40 times.I just do this after a couple of drives rather than doing that.

make sure to use dot4 brake fluid !!

Make sure to protect your painted surfaces; the brake fluid will eat through the paint.

You are on my ignore list. Don't bother responding to me.

Good write up. I do the same above procedure (Ranger method) at least once a year, depending on how dirty or dark the fluid gets.

Frankie15 04-24-2018 10:22 AM

I wouldn't stop here if it's dirty. After filling with new fluid, pump the clutch pedal about 25-30 times, siphon out fluid again, repeat. Continue until the fluid is clear.

EDIT: You mentioned this earlier, but I would put it in the original post as well.

I used this method as well - piece of cake. My car has the new black reservoir that was added when the upgraded MC was installed prior to my ownership. The black reservoir makes it difficult to tell if the fluid is dirty or not. I don't know when or if the previous owner changed the fluid, and I changed it after I put about 1,000 miles on the car. The fluid I pulled out was bright amber & looked really clean, so it may not get dirty as quickly? Only takes a couple min to change, so no harm in doing it more often.

Been published here a number of times...great process; works great. According to our resident Chevy Corvette certified mechanic only needs to be done once a year, unless you are racing! I will say that my shifting and clutch action is noticeably better since doing it this year!

Do NOT pump while the lid is off the reservoir. Make sure it is secure and tight before pumping.

As others have stated, this has been discussed many times. Here's my 90 second Youtube video on the process:

Cheers.
