How many of you turn your own wrenches on your vehicles?
 

Vehicles have changed tremendously over the years and for the average joe, the idea of actually working on a their car is just not going to happen. Be it lack of knowledge or tools, especially those dreaded special tools, many just don't do it.

I grew up working on my bicycles, and then graduated to cars in high school. We did all our own work and drag raced our street cars, this being back in the early 70's. Then turned to Harleys and have done it for decades, including building a number from the ground up. If you go to the bike world such as magazines, it's all about you turning your own wrenches.

I hear very little of that in here. Why?

I don't see anything about adjusting fuel curves using your own computer, a common occurrence with bikes. Do you change your own oil, and filters, sparkplugs?

I do turn my own wrenches. Fluid changes, brake pads and rotors, spark plugs, installed a short throw shifter, swapped visors, radiators, etc. up I know my limits and I’m. It a computer guru, so I leave flashes and tunes to someone else

I've done all of the work on my car but tuning. I don't happen to own a dyno, and if you're going to do a tune right, that's really one of the key components. So I hired someone with a dyno to do my tuning for me. I think that's reasonable and doesn't make me any less of a wrench turner.

Brake pads, rotors, plugs, fluid & filter changes...mostly.

I have been into cars for over 50 years. Just bought my first Corvette (2012 base coupe Centennial Edition) last week. Have always worked on my own cars, my last was a 99 Z28 that I did a cam, exhaust, intake, and a Yank 3600 converter. Ran damn well. Have never learned to tune and don't have interest in learning at this point in my life. My Corvette will probably end up with long tubes, a cam, and converter too, as to if I will do the install, thats up in the air right now.

Turned wrenches on my LS 2 and the LS 7 I just put in. Started back in the 70's working on my 71 Nova SS and my 69 Z/28.

Used to, but things have changed. Started with bikes and go carts, graduated to motorcycles, than cars. My father, then my step father, as well a few uncles and friends of the family were 'wrench turners' and 'gear heads'; taught me a lot growing up. As a young adult, I had a garage full of tools and did just about everything myself to include fully restored an '82 Corvette and a few other vehicles. Unfortunately, these days, due to some physical limitations resulting from cancer surgeries and back issues, sold most of my tools and I do very little myself anymore. :cheers:

Not only do I turn my own wrenchs , but make due in single car garage.

I do my own wrenching.

I do all of my own as well. Can't do some diagnostics,tuning, paint, or alignments due to lack of equipment and cost. I did my SC install, exhaust install, and the widebooty with the help of a couple of friends.

I enjoy doing most of what I can & learning along the way. I've been modding my cars for over 25 years & 23 different cars. Even when things don't go perfectly, I learn which is always a plus. I've never installed an aftermarket stereo in any of my cars until now, and it turned out not being a simple remove stock, wire up new & have no issues. I had to replace the original stereo I purchased off a forum member (another forum) because it was faulty, buy a new head unit, got a faulty interface unit, sent that one back for a new one & it's still giving me a little trouble with extra noise.

Anything computer-related will be handled by professionals, but anything that simply requires removal and replacement (i.e. headers, exhaust, body parts, interior parts, etc.) is easy enough to do myself & a great bonding exercise with my kiddos.

40+ years of "twisting wrenches" and numerous additional capabilities related to automobiles and various components and assemblies typically also known as machines........................ :eek:

like to think that I am capable of fixing anything but a fat woman's broken heart............. :leaving:

I do my own work on all my vehicles. There are 17 year olds on this forum doing cam swaps, and many other repairs. My philosophy is that a assembly line worker put that part on in less than a minute. I can figure out how to take it apart and fix it. Code readers help a lot too. Air bags spook me though.

Teaching my Grand Children now on doing maintenance. Befotre I go, they will know what a lug wrench is and how to use it.

I do most everything. Alignments and tire installs I don't, outside of that I do pretty much all my own work.

Wow I take my hat off to you. Incidentally how do you get in and out of your car in the garage, over the top?

You're looking in the wrong section. There's plenty in here that do their own work.

I can do plenty of my own work and not just mechanical. I've changed out the upholstery a few times and installed all the leather on my door panels and trim. I've also modded my motorcycle (Stage 2) and tuned it myself.

I have enough tools to get most of the work done but I also do all the work around the house. laying tile, granite counters, plumbing, building decks and porches etc... so there's tools for that work as well and it takes up space.

The problem is time and how I choose to use it. Many times the car takes a back seat to a project on the house.
