C6 Z06 brakes installed on 2001 Z06
 

Finally got around to installing my C6 Z06 brakes on my 2001 Z06. I bought the calipers as take-offs from a 2012 Grand Sport, picked up slightly used stock pads, and the rest of the stuff (rotors, speed bleeders, caliper powder coating, SS brake lines, Motul brake fluid) from TPI Motorsports. They were able to match Millennium Yellow using a color called "02 Vette Yellow".

Everything came off fairly easily, with minor trouble getting the new SS brake lines on. New rotors and calipers mounted below :D

Rear set up

Once I put the front wheels on, however, I was shocked at the minimal amount of clearance between the spoke and the caliper :eek: . These wheels are TSW Interlagos, 19"x9" front. Everything I read on the Forum indicated that these wheels would clear C6 Z06 brakes, so I did not worry about it until I fit the wheel on. I hand spun both front wheels and noted no rubbing, so I am going to live with it for a while and see how it does. Worse comes to worse, I will buy some small spacers for the front wheels. No clearance issues on the rear (19"x10.5").

Looks fantastic, nice job on the brakes. Do you notice a firmer pedal? That's my biggest gripe with the brakes. They are strong, but the pedal has a little travel before it firms up. I came from the Porsche world where brake pedals are like rocks, would love to get that feeling back.

Man I have GOT to get rid of the side moldings on my car, looks so much better without them. Beautiful car!

Looks fantastic, Really fills up those wheels! How much of a difference in weight was there between the C5Z rotors and the C6 rotors?

all in all I want to say c6z brakes add about 50lbs total... you can feel the difference in mass at first but you will get used to it and if you add a significant amount of power to the car you won't notice it anymore

You have more clearance than my CCW SP500's have on my C6Z brakes. But if it clears, it clears. The wheel isn't going to change position, and likewise, the caliper isn't going to move either. What I'm getting at is you don't need to worry about a wheel spacer. If it clears now, it clears later.

IIRC, Wilwood recommends a minimum clearance between the caliper and the wheel rim or spoke of something like 0.080". Somethings you have to watch with the location or even have to move the stick on weights. BTW. shape looking Z06!

Great looking Z....pardon my ignorance, after owning a couple of other Vettes I picked up a C5Z:

Direct swap, no brackets needed. Just need longer hoses.

You'll also need larger wheels to clear them. That's what stopped me.

My brake pedal after the swap was firmer, brake grip was near instant. With some modification, you can swap to a larger bore master cylinder, may help with your pedal issue.


I love the yellow, I wish I had went that color on mine. (Went darker red than the way they come) what from lip is that?

for anyone interested, look into doug rippie's brake lines... they are made by goodridge and use -an fittings instead of banjo bolts... they cost a bit more than others but are worth it in my opinion, they are the nicest and best fitting lines I have used

These are what I went for also. I preferred the steel -an fitting over the banjo bolt. Good pieces for sure.

Honestly factory brake lines are cheap... Just pick up a set

How well do the yellow calipers match your yellow paint? I’ve been considering also.

Matches really well, almost spot-on to Millennium Yellow. I am quite happy with the color. If fact, I am planning on having a few underhood parts powder coated in the same color :). It is made by Prismatic --> https://www.prismaticpowders.com/sho...2-vette-yellow

But, that's 50 lbs of unsprung weight, putting a lot more inertia into wheel movements, not a good idea unless it's really essential.
