$5,000 350 Build

So you have a running 1972 ZQ3 350 with 50k original miles, and a budget of $5,000. You have the following stipulations:
  1. Materials - The original block must be used. It doesn't matter why, that is the only stipulation as far as what must be used. Any engine modification is allowed using this block, other than exhaust system, for this example we will utilize the best exhaust capable for your setup.
  2. Usage - Car needs to be driven seasonally, approximately 5k miles a year. Mostly day or weekend trips, but having the ability to tear off a line is a close second.
  3. Character - Make it aggressive
Bonus Points:
  • original 4-speed manual is available - if another $3,000 is available if necessary for your engine build, what do you get?

No biters yet?! Okay, here is what I am thinking
  • 383 Eagle Stroker Kit, 4.03 bore, 6" rods, dish pistons, 3.75" crank
  • Edelbrock Permor RPM heads, 70cc combustion chamber
  • Edelbrock Thunder Cam kit
  • Holley Sniper EFI kit
Slightly over budget but satisfied with potential gains

Phase 2 would be adding a Weiand 144 or 177 Supercharger.

Still wondering about the stock transmission, and then the rear axle...

Last initial addition... the car is my dream since i can remember. Mom bought it new in '71 and gave it to me when I graduated college. I have had it for years trying to keep up with repairs. My dad recently built a 2019 Stingray, and I was fortunate enough to meet him across the country for an inaugural road-trip. It was this experience that led me to decide that I must do the full job. It is a a common combination so I am leaning more towards sentimental and drive-ability upgrades as opposed to completely original. Just trying to make sure I don't mess up my plans from the ordering phase!https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...77f9b672d9.jpg

With 70cc heads I would use 2 eye brow flat tops, not dished. Good luck with your project.

* Original block fitted with a 383 rotating assembly (eagle or scat would be fine)
* hydraulic roller cam for performance and longevity
* if you want to keep the stock iron head look: Engine Quest vortec heads with early intake and valve cover pattern. (about 30 HP better than old fuelie heads)
* if you don't mind aluminum heads the new Trick Flow heads that accept all early front drive stuff.
* Edelbrock performer RPM with Holley 750

about 435-450 HP & 450 torque

Can put you in touch with a place that will get you a 10:1 shortblock for under 2k
AFR heads around 1500ish
Roller cam setup 1k or less or a good ISky SFT setup for 200
Youll come in under budget. The stroker idea is good, 5k is hit or miss.rarely does a rebuilt 350 feel like youd hope it would it costs hardly any more do add cubes today

No way youll do EFI and 383 for 5k.
Spend your $ on the best heads possible.
