Do these tires have any value?
 

I’m getting new tires for my Z, and was wondering if my old tires have any significant value. The tires are Michelin Pilot Sports, standard 2006 ZO6 sizes, with at least 75% tread left, but are about 6 years old. The care was a “garage queen”, so the tires look great. Again, my question is, are they worth trying to sell or not?

If you do sell them I would have the buyer sign an agreement that they cannot come after you when they lose control of their car and crash. I'm joking, but then again I am not!!

No value. Greatly reduced grip at that age, and anyone who knows a thing or two won't give them a second look. I suppose, there is always a sucker out there! $75/obo

Thanks, I’ve heard enough! Not interested in anyone getting hurt using the old tires. I’ll let the them be trashed by the tire installer.

No value except for participating in a burnout contest.

I sold my Goodyear Gen 2 tires dated 2012 with at least half the tread left for $400 on the forum over this past winter. The guy planned to use them on a roller project car he was building.

Someone who just drives around town could get good use out of them. I would not run them at high speed.

Ask $500 and see what happens. No joke, though, make sure the buyer knows their age.

Exactly what I did. Asked 500, sold them for 400.

6 yr old used tires bring the crazies out. Anybody that would buy those tires and is crazy enough to drive a car on them is crazy enough to blame you for whatever happens after the sale.

Making a few hundred dollars on them and the possibility of someone getting hurt or killed just doesn’t sit right with me. It’s just not me to be a party to anything like that. I got new Michelin Pilot Sport 4s today, and realize how dangerous the old tires were. In comparison, the old tires felt like driving on ice. The new PS4s, grip and ride are amazing. I also can’t believe how much quieter they are to the old run flats. Can’t wait until the new tires “slim” is worn off to really try them out.

I had the opportunity to buy 5 year old Toyo tires and I called Toyo direct to ask about "old" tires. They said its not the age of the tire, its how they were were used (heat cycles), how much water has the tire been subject to and finally how much sun light the tire was exposed to.

Your tires are just fine.

I also own a 40 year old car with original Goodyear tires. No cracks in the tread or around the bead. :woohoo:

So the rubber doesn't harden over time?

$400 sits just perfect with me! The guy that bought mine was fully aware of the age and only planned to use them so he could roll his chassis around while he worked on his project kit car. For just casual driving, like a majority of Corvette owners, these tires would probably last another 10,000 miles.

Ive got an my oem rims with no tires sitting in the garage and ive thought about just have one spare just in case of something ya know? so there is always a market.

They have value, for sure.

I personally wouldn't offer much more than 50 bucks a piece. That said it wouldn't surprise me if you could get 3-400 for them for someone who just needs some roll-arounds.

Tires will age, regardless of how little they are used or heat cycled. They are perishable items, and do so at a rate dependent on the environment stored.

If you're content on 40yr old tires simply because they don't have cracks, you've likely never driven a car to any sort of limit where traction and tire quality can be appreciated. An old tire is a pretty risky situation, but I'm allll about darwinism! I just hope you don't hurt anyone else.

Some of the tire shops in my area will not mount summer-only tires over 5 years old, which I'm assuming is due to liability issues. I found this out when I was trying to mount an old tire on an extra rim to use strictly as a spare.
