Wills 71 Project. Paint Stripped

Hi All, I finally finished removing the paint from my 71 Coupe. I still have some of the detail work to do like door jams, Hood and T tops but, most of the big stuff is done. DUB I have posted a bunch of pictures for you to examine. Please give me any pointers you have. As you will see there isn't too much damage but a couple spots on the drivers side front and rear fenders need some help.

VERY NICELY DONE!

As a whole..the body is in fairly decent shape and does not have areas of major concern like I have seen in the past.

I do agree there are a few areas of stripping that need a bit more fine tuning but as a whole..IT looks good.

Obviously I am seeing some body damage and I am sure that those areas will be addressed one by one.

Other than that I do not see anything that raises an eyebrow in these photos you posted.

Thanks, It's basically Alan71's design with a couple of my own mods. I shortened it up to 12 feet and added the nose support.

Great photos, saved them all! Thanks!

What did you use to strip the paint?
My 71 has alot of leftover paint in hard to get corners and creases

I followed DUB's method using Kleen Strip Aircraft Paint Stripper, and lots of paint grade Lacquer thinner to rinse it off after scrubbing with coarse steel wool. I had to hit a few places more than once and I still need to doothe door jams and several other harder spots but, I am done with the body for now. I need to get the chassis put back together so I can get the body back on before winter sets in again. need the garage space for my truck. I will work on the body from time to time as I wait on parts and such. Thanks for your interest.

is there a plan out there ?

Mr D. 05-31-2018 02:25 PM

Very nice paint removal. I also stripped my 71 Coupe but I wish my front end was in good of shape as yours is.

Hit Alan71 up over in the C3 section for a copy of his plans. I have the hi-res .pdf somewhere if you cant connect.

I believe this is Alan's. I built it using 2 x 8's for the base and 2x4's for the uprights. Measurements were spot on. Could of got away with 2x 6's but I felt it would be much more stout if I decided to put casters on it.
There is no support for the nose.

Side Grill opening repair.

I am finally getting back to working on the body after working on the chassis for the last few months. Started looking things over real carefully and came across an issue with a couple things that I feel I need some advice on. The side grill openings are disbonded along the outer fender and the inner structure. I'm not sure what is the best way to fix this?

Little Cage rust Help

So after removing the windshield I found a little bit of rust at the bottom of the right hand corner. Goes down under the fender. What would be the least invasive wat to clean this up and top it from getting worse. I really don't want to take off the front clip if there is an option.

Suggestions??

I HATE to say it....but KNOWING what it looks like under the top hood surround where you found the rust. There is really no easy fix for this....Because you can only stop the rust you can see...and not stop the rust that is under the top hood surround.

And if you can not stop it...then it will get worse and worse.

And dealing with the fender being loose at your fender grill area...well...dealing with that will require the panel to be separated so you can get in there and prep it and apply adhesive. I know some people would pump adhesive in there and hope for the best and that is an option also.

Well Damn, that isn't what I wanted to hear. If I have to take all that apart I will need so careful guidance. Quickly getting outside my comfort zone. Maybe its not as big a job as it sounds but I am definitely in uncharted territory for me. I will start researching now.

Dub,

After looking this situation over, do I only have to remove the front clip to gain access to this area or do I also have to pull the firewall/plenum? The rust is light but it is going under the bonding so I know it will keep going. I am just sick right now thinking about the can of worms I just uncovered. I know there are a lot of people who have had a lot worse than this but I had hopes that based on the rest of this car I would get lucky. Guess not.

:(

Just the front clip. Then the fiberglass bonding areas that you can see right there where the rust is will come off....and they come off relatively easy once you get the clip off. They are pop riveted and bonded in place.

The cowl/firewall is pop riveted and sealed to the front edge of the 'birdcage' and you can get to all of it now due to you taking out the windshield.

How bad that area is ..I can not say due to it is not in your photos but we can deal with that...when and if that times comes.

HEAT is going to be your friend in getting this front clip to come off...along with some home made tools to get in areas so you can get the bonding adhesive to release. So having an IR temperature gun so you know how hot you are getting the fiberglass may be a good thing to get.

Call me if you want a verbal tutorial on this process.

OK, good to know. I will give you a call once I get things prepared to start the job. I want to get the body back on the frame and the rad support back in so everything will be stable and bonding everything back on will be easier to line up. If there are any other important prep suggestions let me know.

Thanks,
Will

Willforce71 07-22-2018 09:33 PM

Body is back on and bolted down. Aligned the doors a bit but plant get them right before I pull the front off so I know what it should be like after I bond it back on. Also worked a little bit on the fender seam. Still getting my bondo spreading legs back under me. Will need another coat or two to get it perfect.

Nice job!

But ..I would wait til you get the clip back on before I spend any more time on the seams of the front clip..

Remember...you are going to use heat to get the factory adhesive to let loose...so at the door gap area...where you have done the seam repair and filling...that may be effected when you go to pull the clip off.

Kind of like.it is somewhat pointless in fixing all the cracked seams in your sheet rock inside your house if you are paying company to move your house down the road several miles. 'Things' can happen.

Seeing how you are quite dedicated in taking the time to do ting right....hopefully you have no issues.
