Cheap Brake Flasher

I bought a flasher module off of Amazon to attach to my 3rd brake light. Seems like a good way to draw the eyes of people behind me off their phones. A larger version could be installed at the brake switch, but these modules state they ONLY work with LEDs, and I'm running the stock taillights. Maybe I'll try it in the future.

My biggest issue was that I didnt want to hack up my harness to install. If I solder it in, I would have to cut it back out if it fails, and a $8 part is likely to fail. I looked all over the interweb, trying to find a match to the connector. I think it falls under the metri-pack family, but could not find a match in both male and female. Finally, I discovered that the third brake light connector is identical to the one on the engine coolant temp sensor. With LS swaps so common, I just had to search for an coolant temp extension harness.

So for about 22 bucks, I have a plug in brake light flasher.

Great to know!
Thanks!
Have you had a chance to actually plug it in and test it?

Thanks, I have thought of doing this. Here in NJ people drive like idiots, never paying attention. Just today I looked in my mirror to see the guy behind me reading papers spread across his steering wheel. I'll have to check that out on Amazon.

striper 06-27-2018 01:15 AM

BTW, where did you get the plugs?

Learning_Curve 06-28-2018 11:29 AM

I bought a engine coolant sensor extension harness off on eBay. The plugs match.

Nice work. Do you have a part # for the extension?

It’s an aftermarket part, so you won’t find it at at parts store. This version is found on Jegs and Amazon: 551333-CT2E

Did you use a LED strip or bulb(s)?

Learning_Curve 07-01-2018 04:53 PM

The stock third brake light is already led.

Dark Sarcasm 07-01-2018 11:53 PM

That's awesome you found out the connectors are the same for very different parts. Great job!

Has anyone got this mod and had any problems with the cops? I jumped the gun before checking the legality and bought the parts, now I'm a little reluctant to use them.
It seems any "non-steady" brake/stop light is illegal. I found this and have found no exceptions.

Section S5.5.10 of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS)

No. 108, Lamps reflective devices and associated equipment, establishesthe wiring requirements for lighting equipment in use, and requires that all lamps be wired to be steady burning, unless otherwise stated.

All stop lamps must be steady burning when in use. Steady means free from change or variation. This means that they must not modulate, flash, or vary in size, area, intensity or appearance.

What's the easiest way to get to the brake light wiring?

Learning_Curve 09-14-2018 04:10 PM

Remove a taillight and stick your arm in elbow deep.

I've been running a flashing led brake light (after market) on my H.D. Road King for 10+ years with no problems.
