Anyone know what clip goes here?

It's the door lock rod that attaches on the lock cylinder It has to have a "positive" stop on the dark end to control the depth the rod moves. I've researched Doorman and can't find a suitable one. The white clip shown has the stop but the elbow is too short and does not hold the rod steady.

That looks to be the rod from 'outside handle to lock' and nothing to do with the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder rod was substantially shorter. I don't recall which side you were working on but search eBay for these #s for what I believe are lock cylinder rods. RH 14043184 and LH 14043183. The images I have from a GM SPO Catalog won't help much to show you. It's either understood or NOT. I have a '89 RH door that I don't know if I can get a snapshot of the inside door or not. '84 and '85 I believe used different hardware on the end of the lock cylinder for security system. Which side are you doing? The 'coated' end of your rod in the snapshot 'floats' in the door latch I'm quite sure.

I believe I am wrong, after taking a closer look and a drawing I see the shorter rod in the background. This is driver side. The small part hanging on the right is the pawl that I broke off, which I have ordered from JB's

You're spot on with everything you've said WVZR*1 . Where does this rod float?
I've purchased what I hope is the correct pawl from JB, it looks slightly different but it's a repo, hope it's right.
PLEASE STICK WITH ME TIL I GET THIS RESOLVED, YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS MY PROBLEM (LANGUAGE, EXPLANATION)

FSM 10-17 image 10-24 and door lock cylinder assembly is in a couple pages earlier. There's not an alarm pawl for '85 I see looking at the FSM.

I tried to get a snapshot inside of my door but the phone failed maybe 10 times to see it!!

This is a typical early GM latch - the coated part of that rod floats in the hole center top, when you lift handle lever pushes down and when you release it just returns.

Mirrock has several latches on eBay that could help you with the positioning of the clips and retainers.

Here's a link and you can 'poke around' on eBay

no clip on the end in question.

this may help...

several good pics. back to your original question about the rod and the "dark end" - (it's been a couple years - trying to recall from memory) - seems top me, there wasn't a clip securing that end, but it was held captive by the nature of the rod shape itself. that agrees with WVZR-1's post. I have detailed pics from my door overhaul/PW retrofit, but it will take some time for locate them. as I recall, you'll need to fish the "dark or coated end" into the lock assembly first, then insert the upper end at the door handle mechanism and secure only that end with a clip. might be out in left field on this one, but i'm thinking the clips are color coded, black and white, RH/LH door assemblies, but which is which - ??? - can't remember.

go to this fleabay ad - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Door-Lock-Latch-Assembly-RH-Passenger-OEM-1986-C4-Corvette-16608234/223043337258?epid=665918822&hash=item33e e6b3c2a - look at the pics. several show how the rod attaches to the lock mechanism.
hope this helps -

I had tried to do the image from the FSM and I really struggled trying to get an image posted using the new forum software. I thought getting you to the correct page in the FSM would suffice. Joe's image with the green circle is actually a FSM image that was used in that article he mentioned. I got the image posted of the "clean latch' and looking through the door frame I thought you could reference the lever with just the rear view. seeing the hole that the rod doesn't go into but you could use it to feel your way around. I didn't look down through the window glass opening from the top of my used door so I don't know that you might be able to look down and see the proper 'hole' - You might very well be able to.

Years ago 'magazine articles' and personal exchanges were how we solved issues like yours. That one was '02 I think looking at the info but years before that it was certainly difficult to learn. These forums around the WWW have certainly changed things. Years ago we had to develop film for snapshots, then Polaroid BUT you needed to have and be able to scan these to a computer to use them. Then the digital format for cameras that was swell. NOW phones and I see people taking snapshots of shelf label to carry to the check-out to confirm they get the price they want. CRAZY WORLD!!

I really can't remember how I re-assembled the rod and door latch/lock mechanism. OP - this is only a suggestion - try feeding in the "non-coated" rod end first through the door lock assembly and working the rod up to the door handle. i'm assuming your window glass is in the up position and the inner sheet metal panel is removed. I seem to recall it was a bit tricky, and i'm thinking i rebuilt everything before my PW assembly was installed. if all else fails, you can always pull the door lock. I've had my doors completely apart and back together, so, it's not an impossible task, just a PITA.

WV - same here - struggle with posting pics. sometimes the new software won't upload the file - even if i cut and paste the "url" and add "[img][/img] - just won't take it. . seems like it's hit or miss. i have had some luck by to posting and edit using "advance" feature to add photos. just not enough of a computer geek to figure this stuff out.
