Would you?
The next street night at my local drag strip is this Friday. I've been planning on going since last month's street night, but I was looking at the weather forecast and it's showing highs of 106 on Friday, which in Texas when you add in the heat index that temp goes up to 113-115. This means that by 8 PM when the races start the heat index might be at around 100-105. I'm a little concerned about this much heat when pushing my car to the limit over and over again. Would you race anyway, or would you pass?

Watch your oil temps and go have fun till they get out of hand
Plus I mean, its just drag racing.... 10-15 sec of heavy acceleration followed by braking. Plenty of time to cool off between runs. |

They force you to get right back in line? You can't just take a break yourself?

That's the thing, at this time of year very few people show up at the track, so it's almost back to back runs with no cool down time between.
These cars aren’t nearly as delicate as everyone makes them out to be. Look at all of us that run HPDEs or time trials. 20-30 minute sessions in 100*+ temps, several hours of total run time, average rpm in excess of 4K during those sessions, all with no ill effects. It’s worse on the person than the car. |
People race these cars on road race tracks for 20-30 minutes all full bore and are fine (even in these temps).
You will be just fine entering your little show and shine Ed.;) Just messin' with ya. Take a break now and then, and pop the hood on the return road to get that hot air out and moving. Put your DIC on oil temps and as long as you're under 300 you'll be fine. |

just because you could run back to back doesn’t mean you have to. Pick a number....6.... go run those 6 times spread out over 90 minutes and you’ll be fine. A road coarse 20-30 minute session in nearly the same heat will have far more heat soak than a few drag pulls.... hell I do drag pulls daily with no temp issues :reddevil :steering: |

Wow 300?! I didn't realize that was an acceptable threshold. Interesting.

I'll see if the big boss will let me come down. I've been wondering what the car will do with the new heads and cam anyway.

I guess I hadn't considered that people were running HPDE's in the middle of summer. That would be brutal here in Texas.
Good luck, and have fun. |

Ed, I would not hesitate to do it. I just did it here in Vegas this past week, got 5 runs in about 90 minutes, no problem. Whenever I was in the secondary staging lanes, I had the engine off and hood up, and the car always cooled down 10-15 degrees on trans and coolant temps. Highest I saw on the trans was 208, and 212 on coolant. Very manageable.
Good luck, and have fun. |

Oil and coolant will always cool down quicker with car at idle. Keep fluids running through engine and into coolers. No brainer. Engine off equals heat soak.

I use to live at the strip! I raced the Motorplex, Kennedale, and Denton. My home strip was Hallsville Raceway. I used to race the TMCCC series, it was fun. I was overall champ one year. That was a fun part of my life, I miss it!
