C8.R hidden aero secrets

R&R compares the C8R to the GT, NSX and Ferraris.

Great technical analysis by R&T. A fun/interesting read.

Great find, thanx John. :)

Here is the C8 R compared to the C7 R. Honestly i cannot tell if these images are made to scale or not.

If they are to scale, there's one thing I don't quite understand. It looks like the C8.R has a shorter wheel base than the C7.R. Is that something that is expected on a ME car? I've always read that a longer wheel base is better for performance.

That is a very good point. I don't know if the C8 is going to have the same wheelbase as the C7. Longer wheel base is better overall for performance but a shorter whee base helps to support better direction change and can possibly make it easier to drive on the street. I hope the C8 has 4 wheel steering.

All things equal an ME can have a shorter wheelbase than an FMR car. That's a benefit - the option to have a shorter wheelbase.

There's upsides and downsides to wheelbase lengths. It depends on what you want out of the car.

I prefer a short wheelbase car. It has good turn in, and it can be made lighter because it is smaller.

The downside of short wheelbase is high speed stability and generally it's easier to generate downforce with a longer body.

I like zippy light cars that can turn, so short wheelbase for me. One can still engineer enough downforce into a small wheelbase car to make it stable at speed and in corners, at least without regulations.

This shot although most likely not exact comparison really shows just how forward the passenger compartment is in the C8 vs the C7

I thing GM is going to have a home run on their hands.

Love the aggressive styling and I guess all those who where concerned that the C8 would be boring or bland can now rethink that.

By far the most aggressive styling since the 68 to 72 C3.

The thing that jumps out is the driver's position to the front wheels.
The C8's position is MUCH closer.
This is what gives MEs the impression/illusion of sitting on top of the front wheels when driving one (like a go-cart).

Turn-ins can be mega-fun with RWD MEs. :)
The 458, especially, is a huge kick in the butt with its turn-ins.

Extensive work has been done by both Skank and FVS — both concluding from known measurements (the tire’s diameter), that the ME’s wheelbase is the same as the C7’s, e.g., at 106.7”. (Margin of error estimated by both as less than one inch).

Additionally, by having the identical wheelbase, using the same equipment that the C7 uses, such as the new last fall’s introduced skillet system, assembling back to back FE’s and ME’s, will be the simplest, most effective, most efficient and at least cost.

Is it just me or does anybody else notice just how close the shape of the C8.R is to the Ferrari 488 GTE above it. I mean except for the rear fender side vent area it almost looks like they're identical, from the front, roof line and even the rear end. Hate to say this but from those side shots, it almost looks like they're testing a camo'ed 488.

In top levels of sports car racing, aero is king. And not only in race cars, but in street cars, aero is increasingly playing a role in their consequent visual design. Going to be even more so in the future.

Corvette has used Ferrari as a design model for decades. I think the C8R looks better than the 488. The 458 was beautiful then the 488 gets that huge ugly big scoop in door. C8 much more stylish.

SBC_and_a_stick 08-10-2018 07:07 PM

Heck, I like the C7 design language far more than Ferrari's, and I really do like Ferrari penwork.

If the wheelbase is just as long as C7, then I think it's safe to say the ME will be shorter. The front overhang looks to be about the same but the ME rear overhang looks much shorter to my eyes.

c8r windshield looks flat ?

I never thought I would hear myself saying this, but the profile on the new Corvette looks BETTER than the Ferrari! That's saying a lot.

Couldn't agree more ... glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I feel the same way about the 360 to 430 evolution.
